What I am driving now....

December 7, 1941. Some may call me shallow, but I'm not over it.

Best to you, Tookie, but I'm hurt anytime I hear of someone changing teams.

Not shallow. I'm the same way. Have never owned an import in my life. Family members have owned 4 over the years, and not one went over a 100K miles without a major problem. I know, everyone else has good luck with them, we didn't, and we take care of our cars. They have just never appealed to me.

Looks like a good little truck. The MPG's are right where I am with my 6.5, but here gasoline is $3.54 a gallon, and diesel is $4.09 a gallon. And it DOES add up over time. I drive my 4 cyl Wrangler any chance I can, but in the winter it goes into storage due to severe rust issues here. So i have no choice but to swallow the cost, i dont know if i could sell my truck to start fresh after ive done so much to it. Good luck with the Toyota, should be a good truck for you!

Have never owned an import in my life.

If you've owned anything built in the last 20 or so years, you've owned
at least partial imports... it's a world economy now, very few things (and almost
no vehicles) are gonna be 100% US made. But I'm not here to debate the merits
of the truck, just showing what I've got now... I like it, should last as long as
the 6.5, and it does what I need... I may end up needing the tow capacity
of a Diesel in the future, but not right now.

As long as the current POS of Administration is in office, pushing the liberial BS agenda of global warming, and bogus loans to solar/wind/ and subsidizing elc cars,, the fuel price will remain high. It fits in with them forcing us to believe their lie's. But by god or high water,, I'll buy as much fossil fuel and burn it to my hearts content as I can, and can afford. $3.99 diesel in my small town, but 8 miles north it's $3.66 and gas is $3.29

nice truck Tookie, ;) Rant off.

That sounds EXACTLY like our current provincial government.. EXACTLY!!

Had the Taco for a little over a year now... still like the truck, but I miss having a diesel. :(
Best MPGs I have been able to get so far is 19.5, really taking it easy.... drive it normally,
and MPGs drop to around 17-18. I guess a 2WD Tacoma would get 1 or 2 MPG bettter,
but it's still less than I would have expected.
I could get better with a Cummins, or probably even a Duramax, and have a full size truck,
and be able to tow anything I wanted. So, nice truck, I like it, but I may be back over here soon...
(or back on the Cummins forum, I'm not prejudiced, had a 2001 3500 DRW for a while too)

NC has the HIGHEST diesel tax in the states I think, around .57/gallon... Gas is around .42 so that alone gives a 15 cents bump. also, diesel moves slower than gas, and it is more stable. so the stations can sit on a high price and know eventually they will sell it.

there is one and only one reason the fuel prices are where they are.

we will pay.

I've heard that from alot of people about the newer 'small' trucks, ever since they made them larger the fuel economy dropped into the teens. Had an 87 nissan ext cab 4x4 v6 with a manual and regularly got 21mpg city 24mpg hwy.

I have heard this also a lot with the mid size trucks. Now a days you can purchase a full size and get very identical fuel mileage.

I think this is something we all struggle with. Reason I bought my 93 6.5TD was because, one, I dont like the driving the same truck 50 of my neighbors are driving, I like something different, which is partly the reason for the wrap in flat black. Second, I like the way Diesels sound, I know, not a good reason to own one, but it was MY reason #2. Reason number 3, I dont want or need to lay rubber on the road. I want to be able to pull 15000 LBS if the need comes up. I have had it for over a year, and have not found the need, but I would eventually like to house a slide in camper in the bed, and pull a boat. I like to fish, and I would like to be able to stay with my truck and boat over a weekend without spending money on fuel, and a hotel. So thats why I am here. On top of that, you can pull alot of weight and still get decent gas mileage. I did not plan on having to replace the motor 2 months after I purchased it, but the great part of that was that I could still get one, and likely will be able to for the next 10-20 years if it goes down again.......

I understand your decision, I like your truck, and yes, every time I fill it up, and it takes another 120 bucks out of my pocket, I think do I really need this? I dont have a camper or a boat, but hey, you only live once, and hopefully one day I will.

There is one reason I keep my 95 k1500 around and I show it in my sig. When. I compare cost/mile for a similarly equipped gasser I actually come out ahead.

Agreed. If I had the same truck with a 454 or if I put in a 502 in its place, I'd not see more than 10 mpg on any day. I had an '89 K3500 that I saw 9 mpg with a bed full of air. With this 6.5, I can see 14-15 mpg empty and +10 loaded light. The fuel price is hard to swallow sometimes, but I believe it's justified. I drive a sacrificial anode in the winter and summer, due to it never getting less than 21 mpg and 30 mpg on the highway. It's paid for itself in fuel savings over the years and it's not a bad ride. My truck is for those times for "when you need it, you NEED it."

True, but they can't make the gasoline without pulling the Diesel out....
the ULSD requirements are increasing the price of Diesel also..
If the price of Diesel and gas would have just remained EVEN, never mind
lower than gas where it should be, I probably would have stayed with the
oil burners, even though I had no real use for a full size truck.
But 10 to 15 dollars extra EVERY fill up adds up quick.

The depreciation on a new truck is at least $2K to $3K per year. At $10 to $15 a week, even 3 times a week, you'd never cover that vs a fully depreciated 6.5 which is a better tow and haul machine. People seem to never factor in their depreciation cost.

Back to Diesel.... :)

2012 Jetta, will post MPGs soon
