New to 6.5 diesel but have an off the wall question I'm planning on changing injectors and turbo. My question is if the turbo doesn't spin will that cause white smoke out of exhaust?

The reason for the caution, this was just discussed in another thread just a week or two ago. That guy was cautioned about using his car type compression gauge on his diesel truck, using an adapter hose.
IIRC it was Will L that warned him that that gauge would explode in his hand.
That would make for a terrible day.

also check to see if your oil doesn't smell of diesel. if it's been running long like this or the injectors have been pumping too much diesel into the cylinders, the piston rings could be washed out and have diesel in the oil. if that's the case you won't get a true reading on the compression test.

you can do an oil change and then pull the upper intake horn so the (not spinning) turbo isn't choking it down. idle it for a few minutes as long as there are no fuel or oil leaks around the intake area for it to suck in and run away. get it semi warm then let it cool a couple hours before doing the compression test. as it's running at idle, the smoking should clear out a bit if the turbo is the cause. but if you accelerate with out the turbo working, it will dump more fuel where the turbo would be pushing more air in to equalize the 14:1 air fuel ratio. no turbo = running rich and choking.

you can also change the oil and run it a few minutes leaving the intake horn in-place, just don't give it any throttle.

that will ensure you have some fresh oil up on the rings and get a true compression reading on all cylinders.
 
when you start the compression testing, be sure to disnonnect the fuel shutoff solenoid and PMD. disable the lift pump too so it won't try to start with the gauge installed.
