Turbo comparisons on a test rig

Since there is so much talk about turbos and which is best, Should there be a turbo comparison day? Take A known truck and a stock factory tune then a tune modified for the specific truck and turbo so that we can quantify the attributes of all the proposed models. We would need a truck that has all of the monitoring gauges that would apply.

This way we have a know truck that is the same configuration, which takes away the unknown? CAN I bring my blown 6.5 with my roots blower on it? or is that cheating:)

Wish i had my Holset on, would be a good canidate for this.. Sadly my metal fab skills rot so im looking for a fabricator...

Can I volunteer to help turn wrenches? I've been doing this ATT On - ATT Off swap thing for a year now. Unfortunately, I didn't start with a stock tune or intake set up so no OEM baseline data and a K1500 wouldn't allow for a realistic test should your time allow for towing a decent load like what Great White pulled on bumper or AutoPilot (DP) has in his Avitar. Still, I'd be interested. It would be good to be able to repeat the testing at an altitude greater than 4500 feet with those loads, but I think just getting together to do this series of tests would be beneficial.

When do you foresee such an event taking place?

I have ran a GM5, GM8 and now have the Holset HX35, send me up an ATT and I will post feed back if it will out peforme the holset I have.

So how do I know it will outperform your Holset, before we test it? Objectivity is needed for the person doing the test. You failed the first test (objectivity) .LOL

Oooooookay, I was just trying to help but what ever :)

Help and gesture was much appreciated. If you can maintain objectivity, (very very hard to do for me) then it can happen. Cause I thin k you realize what kind of slack you can get for thinking outside the box. Nice dual turbo set up I admire that. :agreed:

I have a killer mountain grade with killer temps we can use. It is the 10% grade to Payson, AZ that goes on for better than a mile with lots of good grades in between here and the hill. I have sent a couple 6.5's to the scrapyard attempting to make this climb.

None of the wimpy Heath area hills. :hihi: Even more hazard is the Elk in the area - not 'love tap' deers.

So far the best I can do is 43 MPH up the hill with a 24' cargo trailer on the 1993. Before turning up the fuel and boost it was 33 MPH. I want to beat the GM3 for killing top RPM power when I need it most. Why you gain speed in a higher gear and can't keep speed at higher RPM in a lower gear you know something is FUBAR. In any case the altitude climb will run a GM3 into the choke region over 15 PSI if you have it adjusted below that in in Phoenix.

So for a testing plan there are few ways to go about it:
Dyno
Hill pull with trailer.
Hill pull without trailer.
Steady speed and MPG results.
1/4 track time.

Things to watch are altitude, outside temps, boost, MPH, ECT, fan use, and MPG. In fact all the tests would benefit from closely measured MPG. One rule: It can't overheat ECT more than 1 line over 210. EGT is fair game till something melts.

I think it would be objective to have a DS4 category and a DB2 category. This would be a run what you bring category. Otherwise we are swapping turbo's and tunes on a test rig. A test rig is the best way to be objective as rear end changes make a big difference.

Phoenix would be great. The low altitude tests could be done in town and use the "flavor of Choice" turbo to make the run up to Payson where the rest of the tests could be re-done by swapping turbo's in a parking lot and then roll down to the base of the climb to ensure things are on and functioning before turning around and heading back up hill. Can't remember the name of the community, but AZ-887 splits there and there are a few places still doing buisness that might appreciate some company. May I suggest, as a courtesy to the non-acclimated visitors to AZ and Phoenix that the months between Mid Oct-April be considered.

I'm very interested in getting involved. Have both the GM5 and ATTs available and while the K1500 couldn't haul a serious load, a bumper pulled 4K toy hauler or weekend camper could be had for comparisons in those arenas. I don't have an OEM PCM for this truck though.... I do have camera, video, writing and wrenching skills that may prove useful. Could document the climbs from an in cab and external view point.
Let me know.

I like the idea. Should this actually happen, I may have a TE06H to lend as long as it comes back in one piece!

This sounds like it may be something that can be worked out. WarWagon sounds like he may have the best truck for hauling things since he is familiar with the terrain, already has the ATT and towing setup as well. I would like to attend that and would make an effort to do it.

We would have to have a way to monitor all the parameters at once and would also need a seat of the pants dyno rendition just for perceived effect. This is shaping up. CAn I get my blower setup done in time?

We also have Firebird 1/4 mile raceway that has run what you bring on Friday nights. I sure we would be the slowest things there. As in get passed twice as they stage and run another hot rod in the lane next to us.

:treed:

Yeah the crowd would walk out. Only a 6.5 guy would find it interesting

GOOD idea if you can talk him into it. How do we compensate him for the truck?:sifone:

I think you will see substainal differences from a DB2 truck to a DS4 truck. I own both. They respond very different. Stick or Auto makes a huge difference as well. You defintely get a "lag" with an NV4500. Even my N/A 6.2 has a lag between 3-4 gear. Also what year and ratio NV4500. That is the whole issue here. I don't believe for a second one turbo works for every configuration. I won't get into the many different tunes.
