Towing capacity

I've got a temperature controlled fan on the remote tranny cooler under the bed so I've always got the heat under control. Had to have it as my hill climbing speed was about 10mph in some cases.

You're right about the cold tranny with no load. I'm going to rig a three way valve so I can be running through the radiator when I'm not towing (much better warm up) and "bypass" with the trailer on.

Talk to leroy he's got a thermostatically controlled bypass valve.

FWIW I just talked to my tranny builder this morning, according to him 160F in the pan is ideal temp, I just had the trans rebuilt last week, same guy that built it in 2002, said with exception of the clutches that got burnt up for loss of lube when I lost a line last fall and pumped out all my fluid, all other clutches still had pn/mfr number "ink marks" on them. Like new after 7 years and approx 110K miles of sometimes very hard pulling and no issues I think he's got the right formula for building at HD trans out of the 4L80E.

His comment to me this morning was that, heat of the return fluid and fluid in the converter is the killer, said no need to worry of trans fluid that is "too cold", heat picked up by trans from the radiator would be sufficent "warming" of the trans fluid.

Mine has spent many a day with needle on trans gage (pan temp) under the 140F peg trans builder say other than smoking 1 clutch set and the torque converter from lack of lube when the line blew, nothing else was wrong with the trans.
