Towing capacity

There is an * next the the 7.4engies that say a fifth wheel weight distrribution hitch limited to 10,000 lbs,

nothing on the 6.5's though.. This manual is specifically for c/k trucks too. But i'm sure your more concerned with pulling, or being legal? I would think the tahoe's would be lower than the 3500's. You may be over-weight legally pulling 6600.
 
What's the wheelbase on the Tahoe? I wonder if the limit is 5000 lbs based on the wheelbase. Towing long trailers with short wheelbase tow vehicles is not fun.

I've done it already. My last camper was about 6500lbs. as long as you use a weight hitch and sway control it handles just fine.
 
Wheelbase is 111.5" which is slightly longer than a regular cab short bed and slightly shorter than a regular cab standard bed.

Aces, you have 3.42s? Want to swap straight up for a set of 3.73s? I could meet you at the Bridgeport Ferry dock this summer when I visit the folks on L.I....:)
 
I have 3.42s. I like them. I do alot of hi way driving. where ya from on LI ? I'm an ex LI myself. Besides to go through all that work to swap pumpkins, it would be stupid to not do a lift :devil: then tires....then divorce... :eek:
 
I can understand wanting to keep the higher gears. For how I use the Tahoe, I have always wished I had them to drop the RPMs just a bit more...Besides the 7-pin connector, I am thinking that the lower gears was all the "Heavy-Duty Towing" option got you on these things...

Grew up 2 towns East of Port Jeff (Miller Place). Folks are now in Setauket, one town West of Port Jeff.

Left for the first time in '82, for good in '92. Hardly recognize it when I go back and frankly, usually can't wait to get the hell out of there by the end of a week...

Me too. I do a lot of 70 plus mph highway driving and wish I wasn't turning 2,400 rpms all the time.
 
aces you should get a intercooler or an ATT. the ATT is really dropping temps on these engines when your towing heavy loads.

I towed a 24' camping trailer, gross trailer weight about 7000 lbs with my 78 Scout (100" wheelbase). I used weight distributing system and sway control. I probably would have died coming down Sardine canyon into Brigham City if it weren't for the sway control. I durn near died anyway. That's when I bought my 91 Burban, and the difference is night and day. The Scout was okay except on long downgrades, when it was all over the road. 4.11 gears and a 345 had plenty (well, never plenty, but enough) of go power, but the little Scout was just too small for that heavy trailer.
 
Tranny cooler?

Where's your tranny cooler on this? Is it a coil inside the radiator or a separate cooler outside? I'm betting you have at least the one in the rad.

Here's where I'm going with this. You have 3.42s, so when you're pulling up a hill your off of the TCC and in 3rd or 2nd. This makes lots of tranny heat and you're shoving this into the radiator and causing the overheating problem.

Just my .02, but, when I "divorced" my transmision circuit from my radiator I got a lot of heat out of my engine.

I've heard of this being done and thought it made sense at the time because I felt a person would be forcing the temperature of the transmission to raise to at least the same temperature of the coolant. I found quite the opposite in my case, though. If I am not towing or not towing heavy, my ATF temp. in the pan doesn't even register on the gauge (starts at 160 or 170 F).

When towing in town and in stop and go traffic where there is no air flow across the fins of the external cooler, there is very little cooling that can take place unless there's contact with the cooler water in the radiator on the heat sink inside it.

I have a larger than normal external cooler, as well, and I wouldn't by-pass the cooler inside the radiator, myself. That's just me, though.

I've got a temperature controlled fan on the remote tranny cooler under the bed so I've always got the heat under control. Had to have it as my hill climbing speed was about 10mph in some cases.

You're right about the cold tranny with no load. I'm going to rig a three way valve so I can be running through the radiator when I'm not towing (much better warm up) and "bypass" with the trailer on.
 
Aces, IMO with the weight dist hitch and sway control you should be money for just about anything. Granted some of the systems are rated for what range of load they carry. Maybe give the weight dist hitch manual a look see?

Sounds great! I think the Tahoe will handle it just fine. Just make sure the trailer brakes are working top notch and the brake controller is getting the trailer brakes on fast before the truck brakes. You probably already know that though.
