Tips, tricks and shortcuts for installing injectors

And Rob, did you have a socket with the 7/8 wrench head for the passenger side? The axkle socket does not have the wrench head, so if needed, I would have to grind it in.

No I didn't. I just used a rachet and after a couple turns I reached in there and spun the socket by hand.

I did have to trim the socket to get the inj. behind the pass. side manifold.

For those who can do it with turbo mounted? My hat is off to you. Seriously. I tried. Life suddenly seemed better when the turbo came off.

I would add down pipe must be moved to reach #6 glow plug. In fact, Mine had to come OFF because the stupid wire would not come off the old glow plug.

Question- my turbo did NOT have a flange gasket. Is this common??

No need to remove inner wheel well or turbo.

Just heat shields and inj. lines and I believe I moved the over flow for room for access.

The band clamp is the gasket.

A buddy of mine did my glows and did not have to remove anything.....The tough ones he just went in thru the wheel well with a few extensions and a good swivel socket on there and was able to remove and install them all in under an hour..... FYI <----

Don't know how in the world he got the glow behind the downpipe. There is maybe a 1/2 inch between clearance. Unless he has removed the shield around that GP. That would be significantly shorter and much easier to reach.

The injector r/r job is simple, but for me, turbo comes off, period. WHole job took 2 hours the 3rd time I did it (including turbo, inner fender).

I've never removed the down pipe for glow plugs. I use a combination of 1/4" Craftsman battery/cordless ratchet, 1/4" & 3/8 Snap-on long handle ratchets and long - straight and bent nosed needle nose pliers.
Sometimes I can get it from the wheel well and sometimes from underneath the vehicle.

Well I am about to do GP and Injectors. I am starting with the passenger side. I have the fender out, cleaned up the engine and, hosed down all bolts with penetrating oil. I'm going to leave it until tomorrow. I find the nuts come off easier with longer soak time. I am removing the turbo as this is the only way I can see having enough room to work in. Even then the GP behind the downpipe appears to be a PITA. I take my hat off to those of you who can do this in half a day or less. This is my first attempt with about 2 hours in and I haven't exposed the passenger side to work on.

Well I guess having the socket first is the key. I went too all my local shops no-one has any stock. The Snap-on guy up in Nanaimo says he has oEne but it won't be here until Tues. Well I can do my GP and a few other things first. I did find a 30mm deep impact socket but I don't feel like grinding wrench notches into it. Also I may call the dealer maybe I can borrow one from them it is worth a try.
