The Larry Thread

I found it on Little D... bought I new sleeve/ hose from the local GM parts department. If I remember it was like $15. Seems crazy not to replace it. On another note discovered Larry has a 141 block. It was the first time I have seen a 6.5 casting with the rear turbo provisions and ops in the valley. Even though they were not tapped seemed kinda strange. My understanding is that they are a decent blocks with the small outer bolts on the main caps and no sqirters. I think they only made them mid late 95 and into 96 before the 506 blocks.

After 3 days 500+ miles on the truck with the A-Team I am still grinning. Love the way the truck runs. 60mph on level ground, 1950 rpms 1psi and egts about 400. 70mph on level ground, 2250 rpms just under 3psi and egts about 450. This is running empty. In town traffic usually 3psi keeps with traffic and 4psi leaves them behind. Rarely ever see or need more than 5psi. Fuel mileage seems to be up as well. She had dropped to 17.6 with the chip and turbomaster. 1st tank with the ATT on about 3/4 of the tank with a fuel leak(now corrected) 17.9. I find myself lifting or hovering over the throttle or else she starts to creep up in speed. The only thing I miss is the whistle. Here are a couple of videos of how she runs. 1st one is about 10psi, 2nd one is 8psi, and the 3rd one is 13psi. On the last one the egts never passed 850! Have yet to see smoke in the daylight when I get on her. At night I can see a haze in the car lights behind me.

Thanks. I do like the sound, just different. Just filled up and despite a intermittent fuel leak (you open the hood and the leak disappears:mad2:) got 19.3. Should pay for the turbo in 6 months in fuel savings if this mileage holds up.

Yesterday got the fuel leak fixed :D ... there was a small cut in the rubber line from the manager to the drain on the t-stat. It was hidden under a piece of split loom. How it got there with loom protecting it I will never know.

Installed the new oil cooler lines from Leroy Diesel (thanks!) and cleaned the crud between the cooler and AC condenser. Also pulled the condenser forward and vacuumed the crud out piled up in front of the radiator. Then took a air nozzle and blew everything out. On the test drive she run cooler and the AC blows a little colder!

That was alot of crap in the radiator. Its going to be a hot summer I think. We already need A/C during the day in cars/trucks.

Yes summer will be here shortly. Already had to use the AC once already figured I better get on top of radiator maintenance before the first heat wave. I am always amazed how much crap is gets behind everything. Little D was alot worse. The leaves were packed a 1/3 of the way up the rad.

Gave her wash this afternoon and installed the Trac Rac.

Set the timing yesterday afternoon. Got the TDCO set to -1.94 the first try.:D Thanks for the suggestions for me to get the Scantech software. Kinda nice to be able to diagnose/ tune at my leisure!

While I was working on Garry I needed to switch fuel filters as tall top Napa units will not clear the air cleaner on the NA motors. When I pulled the filter it was black after less than 3000k!:???: :WTF: You guys have any thought? I have seen pics of the filters from a truck with bugs and this thing is coal black black. The filter I initially removed installed by the PO was coal black. Never seen one that dark. Looks nothing like the ones I have seen with bugs.

Might be a good idea to drop the tank and check for gunk. If the filter is getting that bad imagine what the tank sock might look like

Yeah I was afraid you were going to say that. The lines from the tank look to be rusty (the kinda rust were if you poke at it you have a hole) so looks like it might be time for to drop the tank, install a new sending unit, new supply lines, remove the sock, install a pre filter, and a Walbro pump. Will check the filter in a few hundred miles and see what she looks like. Might be why the mileage dropped right after the first tank with the ATT. I swapped in a the FFM from Gertie with a new filter because I had modded that FFM for FTB. Got 19.6 then she dropped to 18.2-18.4. Last tank she dropped again... 17.8.

The first time I changed the filter looked like the like pic below. Yesterday it looked the same or worse!

Wow. Maybe little d has me spoiled. I was changing the fuel filter every 13-15k on little d and they always were a nice light caramel color. Maybe the po owner was lax on service in Larry.

Mine are pretty clean still after 3K. Only ever had one come out black and that was on a newly bought truck, no telling how many miles were on it?

Maybe the guy bought his fuel wherever and was not so regular on the maintenance. Gary's stays clean as well. I am going to check in a few miles and we will see. Would like to wait a few more months on the tank as I still need to install the 02 Water Pump and D Max fan. I also want to get the Derale trans pan on... essential stuff to prepare for summer heat.

maybe i should drop my tank then! I always figured being decolored at 10k was normal. Its due for a change so I will take a pic to compare
