Starter not turning fast

So my buddy`s 93' 6.5 is having problems starting. He just installed a new starter and has new batteries both with 850cca and 1000ca. When he turns it over, she`ll start turning over but its slow, really slow. So obviously she`s not starting. I'm thinking its a short somewhere draining all the power from the starter as the keys turned. Any ideas?
 
How old are the battery cables? The stock cables are a known week point, and cause of alot of starting issues.
 
New starter as in rebuilt? Wouldn't be the first bad rebuild.
Make sure you double check all grounds.

He got a new rebuild, it was doing the exact same thing so he took it back and got it exchanged for another new one. Which hasn't changed anything
 
It's either a bad engine dragging, bad batteries, bad starter, or bad cables. GM cables are notorious for looking fine, but being bad. Break out the volt meter and measure how much current loss your getting through the cables during cranking. You have to make certain the voltage is getting to the starter.
 
Check the cables, mine was bad about 1-2 inches from the battery. This was the battery cable that went from the battery to the starter. The outside and connections looked fine. The inside went bad and was causing the starter to turn slow at first. Then it would intermediately start. Then no start.
 
Acts like 1 battery isn't working. Check the double positive connector going to the starter. Check both batteries as new parts don't mean good parts - ever.
You want like 11.5V at the starter and the batteries are to be close to that voltage while cranking. Also check both the positive and the ground cables.

Disconnect the pink IP wire and crank for 10 seconds for each test point:
Use a voltmeter off the starter, then driver side battery, and then the passenger side battery. The voltages should be pretty close getting slightly lower as you move away from the starter. By battery I mean the voltmeter on the battery posts as you test the cables later.

Testing cables you are looking for a voltage across it when cranking. You will get some, but, excessive readings indicate an issue. If one or more cable doesn't stand out make sure to write down the voltages to post up here.
 
Had a similar problem on Larry... the batteries looked the same but one was almost ten years old. The ten year old battery had a dead cell.
 
I would start by pulling off the "new ends" and getting fresh 0 welding cable build professional cables to each battery, and the block from each battery, and the starter.
My truck is beginning to show signs of slowdown from the stock cables, and I'm ramping up to get this done.
it's NOT cheap, but for piece of mind, I'm going this route to provide best power to the starter, and the glow plug relay.

I also wish to install a large deep cell battery on an isolation relay to power the inverter in the cab, along with setting up the winch feed/jumper connections...
 
I'm having issue's with my starter. Not to hi-Jack the thread,, but mine, cranks slow at first,, then on 2nd try,, it cranks faster,, then fast enough to start truck. 2 new AMG batteries, Haven't tested my cables yet, but looking at putting this starter in. http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/C.../Starter-New-Hi-Perf/_/R-NNE4N1603_0232616229

It's a NEW Hitachi 2.0KW gear reduction unit. NAPA says 100% NEW units have No core charge.

Because it will start faster,, ea time I try it. I'm thinking that putting the voltage/heat to the starter, on the first try,,, it's loosening up <so to speak > the internals of the starter, and allowing it turn faster on ea try. Same starter has given me heatsoak problems last summer on long drives. But I didn't repalce at the time, as it got colder, and that issue went away. I'll be testing the cables before I drop the starter out, just to make sure cables are good.

That starter pictured is for a gasser, not a diesel. I did a check and they don't even list that starter as fitting a 6.5. And 2.0KW is smaller than the stock 2.5KW DELCO 28MT starter they come with. ROCKAUTO has a brand new AC DELCO for a good bit less than that one NAPA is trying to sell you. They also carry REMY which I have had good luck with.
 
Awesome save for me dude!! Thanks a ton. I looked at their website again,,, and noticed to the left that there is an ENGINE selection After I inputed my vehicle info. and that web page filter ,, filtered out 70% of the starters listed. I called them back, and had 2 mins to spare to get one on the truck overnighted to the local store for me to get in the morning. If I had time to wait for Rock Auto I would. BUT,,,, after the bus route @ 5 today,, I turned the key, and Nothing!! NO click, NO noise at all. I got a Big F$#'ing hammer and wacked it a few times,, then put the bus garage Jump box on it for good measure, and It cranked,,, slow at first,, then a bit faster,, then on the third try,,, enough to get her running, so I could get her home and in a cleaned garage on ramps, and ready for surgery. with Thisunit: http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/CatalogItemDetail.aspx/Starter-New/_/R-NNE4N5092_0075292048

Well I got in there,, and replaced the starter,,, found a back glow wire unpluged,, and a few other minor things, that got fixed while in there. After a few knicked knuckles,, and a few swear words,, it all back together,, and MAN O MAN,, does this thing crank fast! Starts in 1/3 of the time it took my old starter <before it started acting all stupid> SO 1 more thing on the list of taken care of items,,, until the next thing sneaks up on me.
Can't stress how awesome it is on this forum to be able to look up wiring diagrams,, and others issues and fix's. And get Great advice from other like minded gearheads.

You can also test your cables by hooking the load tester to the starter end of the cable

Raceman or somebody sells a complete battery cable kit. I think he has them on Ebay. Search 6.5 diesel battery cables.

It's cheaper to make your own though. Do not use the clamp on battery cable ends get the good solder/crimp on style ends
