Starter not turning fast

Did you pull the starter off and take the cover off { 2 bolts}....the slots on the commitator build up with the mica from the brushes.....I use a hack saw blade to cut it down so there is an actual gap or refered as air gap between brushes and comitator......or just worn out brushes and filled in air gaps with mica

My problems got worse friday afternoon at the distributor I get equipment from... it's been SLOW cranking, that I attributed to cables, but the cleaned up nicely, with zero signs of corrosion on them, and I just have NOT had time to swap in the new raceman cables yet... it finally went crankcrankcrankgrrrrr.s.ss..s I knew the signs... and called up carquest (man they are pricey for a starter and core!!!) dropped the starter out, popped in the carquest one, and WOWOWOW! that thing sure cranks fast!

if your starter doesn't sound like a diesel gear drive motor starting, you should replace your starter! ahrurarurrarurrr is NOT normal starter cranking... it should be chikraroom! very fast cranking... still have the stock cables, but once I clean the gunk from the motor, and get a slowdown, I'll drop it again, and install the upgraded cables, and fix whatever that small wire is up near the glow loom...
