Shaky Start with Lots of Blue Smoke

thats what im thinking plus combined with a dying glowplug controller it has really killed my coldstarting abilities. when i bought the truck they said the ip was recently new. i wonder if it was not timed correctly when it was replaced

I wish you would have given that info in your first post bud:rolleyes5:

yeah sorry to whoever i jacked this thread from. i should really start my own.

It's all good bud, thats the way it goes sometimes:smile5: Sometimes the answer comes from a hijack

Anyways, still haven't had time to do much more diagnosis, other than LP which is good, and changed the air filter, which was really dirty.

Also found mice shit on my valve covers/valley, and get this, shit behind my air filter!!! The truck never sits for more than 3 days max...Wonder if someone chewed thru something causing weird timing or cold start advance issues?

Either way, bought some Howes Diesel lube and added it to the Power Service when I filled up tonight. Will see if it makes a difference in the morning.

In the comments for that video on youtube the owner said he had fixed the problem and it turned out to be his sending unit leaking. This was causing it to bleed out over night giving him air in his lines making the fuel solenoid stick. It sounds plausible but I would start planning on an IP swap in the future. My truck is doing the same thing and I have checked and or changed everything related to the glow plug and fuel system. I did put a switch in the CTS circuit and it starts right up and clean everytime. Ok for now but I think I'll being getting an IP for when the time comes.

The sending unit includes the steel lines that come up out of the fuel tank, those commonly rust and weep fuel.

Duh, OK, stuck on stupid there for a minute...So if the tank is FULL and the unit leaks, would there still be air?.....Not the "lines", the sending unit.

If the CTS trick works, and the sensor ohms out correctly, then the next thing I would expect anyone to do is know their baseline timing. Check the current TDCO, then run the relearn and see if it changes drastically or even goes out of tolerance.

The fuel solenoid meters fuel and in a way controls timing, because when it closes the injection even begins. The PCM controls it all with the signal it sends to the PMD, which then sends to the fuel solenoid. PCM also controls the stepper motor which control advance and retard.

Well it would be nice to know if the sending unit is the "fix", it's a pricey unit to be playing, "swap and pray."

Where's GMCTD when "we" need him.....Quick, Someone shine the "Bat Light."
