Shaky Start with Lots of Blue Smoke

Like normal, I waited for the "Wait to Start" light to go out, then cranked it over for a couple seconds and it caught, but shook, coughed and blew lots of blue smoke. While it was doing this, it was very "smooth and soft" sounding, not like the normal bolts in crank diesel sound. Then within about 10 seconds she caught, revved a couple hundred RPM higher(then returned to normal higher idle) and returned to sounding like a clanky diesel and the blue smoke went away. It almost felt like she was about to die for those first 10 seconds. Was maybe 5-8deg C or around 40-45f outside...not any colder than it's been lately.

I've noticed it do this before but not as bad, mostly when cold and when she hasn't been run in a couple days. But it would only do it for a couple seconds at most before returning to sounding like its normal self. It does usually puff a bit of blue smoke for the first second or two when cold as well.

But this morning was the worst, and I had driven her yesterday so it's not like she sat for a long time.

Any idea what to check for? Glows are Duratherm and are a few years old. Maybe the cold advance is slow to kick in? Or does this just sound like glow plugs are wearing out?

I'm mainly concerned with the blue smoke and shaking.

Thanks

mine does the same but with a more whitish smoke and it's the ip going south. check for air first and check timing. I've been running a quart of nd30wt in every tank of fuel and it has improved my ip to the point I'm going to keep running it until the mileage goes down or it dies.

Have you done standard testing?

Lift pump is all good, you know that it is running during WTS and idle with good pressure?

Tried another PMD not on the extension?

Hopefully you have been using a decent lubricant in the fuel, the PS bottle that a lot of people use isnt adequate.

Start any different if block heater plugged in, or is that with the block heater?

Do you know what the timing is set at? TDCO value? You might get a scanner and check it and then run the KOKO procedure and see if it changes.

Sounds like bad glows to me. I also have never understood the color of diesel smoke. I know white is unburnt fuel. When I was down to two working gp's the smoke was bright white/light blue and smelled like raw diesel.

Even now with my IP having one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel, under heavy acceleration or lugging on take off the smoke is a dark bluish black. I've been told by several 'experts' that this is oil smoke even though my old girl only uses 1 qt per 3k miles....then several other 'experts' tell me it's the IP.

Who knows.....

Nope folks, that soft low sub idle with lots of grey/blue/black smoke and then the sudden increase in RPM' when all the jugs come on stream what he is experiencing is exactly what i have with my 98.
I got a brandnew rebuild engine incl inj and glows,+ all sensors,
Only thing i took along from the old engine was the IP,that old engine had the same symptoms.
I think the advance is prob sticky or the stepper motor has an issue
I bet he's got a dead pedal along with the low idle.

Adding 2 stroke oil or 10w30 to the fuel like AK does has made the prob allmost go away, but not quite.

Damn, sounds like some potential expensive issues! LP was fine a few months ago but will check again. I haven't checked the glow plugs yet, but I'm hoping maybe thats all it is, as this has only happened on cold starts.

Here is a link to a video, not my truck, but someone elses that is doing pretty much the same thing as mine.

Its not the LP,its the IP that is your problem, and yes its always only at cold start. Read my other post again.

I got the same prob.....Now disconnect your CTS on the top of the coolant X over and try it again.....I bet she starts right up.....and Bison your right, he has no go pedal untill she catches!

Wouldn't that mean it's just a faulty CTS ? Can't I just replace it?

And Bison it definitely sounds like a momentary timing issue, if it is a faulty cold advance component(stepper motor) can't the problem component just be replaced without having to buy a whole new IP? I hope adding more lube will reduce the problem and buy me some more time.

Thanks again
