Just purchased an '01, CC, LB, 2wd with a 6" RCD lift and 315/75/16 tires. It has 146K and injectors were replaced at 50K back in '04. A Carfax showed dealer maintanance up through 110K, then it appears to have disappeared. The car dealer had it run through the stealership where they did an injector balance test and some trouble shooting on the tranny. It shifts really hard going down from second to first. They took it to a trans shop where he is going to put in a shift kit/valve body/seloniod etc. Throws a P1781 code which I can't seem to identify............

I also ordered some 2" blocks for the rear as I'm going to lower the rig just a bit. At age 47 the 6" lift and tires just don't turn me on like they would have 20+ years ago! The tech at RCD recommended the 2" blocks and turning the torsion bars to take 2" out of the front. Anymore than that and I'd have to replace the shocks.

We're heading out on a few trips with the travel trailer this summer. About 5-6,000 pounds on the trailer and some steep grades getting to Fort Bragg in the 100+ degree heat. What are the short comings on the rig beyond the injectors. I'm the type that likes to spend some time going through things to ensure reliability as opposed to breaking down on the trip........... Figured I'd pull the radiator/intercooler and clean them thoroughly. Coming out of the 6.5 arena, there are numerous upgrades/improvements so what should I check out on the '01. Fuel filter? Fuel pump? Any electrical issues? How about cooling mods? There doesn't seem to be very much shown on the forums in terms of issues with the dmax, thats' a good thing!

Thanks

Lance

Congrats on the new ride!

You probably won't have to peck away at this one like the 6.5. Injectors are about the only issue with the LB7s. If they've checked out ok you're good to go. Of course some normal maint items are in order like fuel filter, trans fluid and spin on filter, differential change and of course LOF. The veteran LB7 guys will have a few more ideas.

Always grab a extra fuel filter, you never know when you'll buy a bad batch of fuel.

It'll be a total different truck over your 6.5.

While nearly 10 years old now, those first generations were good trucks. Other than their plagued injector issues, they've been lasting a very long time.

Congrats on the buy. As for the P1781 that means that there is a problem with the circuit that the TCM uses to tell the ECM to turn the MIL on. As for the 2-1 downshift, that is a known issue and GM has an update available for it that involves flashing newer software into the TCM. As for a shift kit, don't waste your money right now. A shift kit on the 01-05 involves pulling the trans out to do it right as internal mods need to be made to the C2 and C1 apply servos internally as well as new C2 release springs. If they are doing the one that is just in the valve body it will most likely be a BULLY DOG which is a complete waste of time and money as the TCM will just re-adapt to it and it will provide no long term benefit. Sounds like you need to find somebody with a TECH II or EFILIVE to scan the TCM and go from there as most scanners cannot access the TCM.

As for upgrades just make sure she is in top shape and only use the newer updated filters from RACOR or ACDELCO. A single lift pump would be a good upgrade, but not required. New T-stats and replace the turbo cooling hose with purosil hose, and replace the fuel lines at the engine as the 5 rubber hoses will most likely be as hard as a rock after 9 years and just waiting to crack and cause a loss of prime and no start. Just basic stuff though really as the DMAX is one POWERFUL SOB compared to a 6.5.

Ok, you mention single lift pump, what is available/recommended and how much $$$. Is the purosil hose a standard issue parts store hose or special order specific to the Dmax? How about the fuel hoses, are they bulk hose cut to fit or specific to this application?

Thanks again, can't wait to try it out in the hills!

Yeah, I knew the move would foster some harrassment! Sure is a cult following with the 6.5! It was a great truck but my next move after the A Team Turbo was another 1000.00 for water injection and a Kojo A Team ECM all in an attempt to maintain speed up the hills and prevent overheating. The Dmax purchase just made sense at this time...............

I'm running a single KENNEDY pump on mine as it is quiet, enough flow to support up around 400HP, and it is free flowing so if it ever does fail it won't stop fuel from getting to the engine. The PUROSIL hose is the blue silicone hose. Most hydraulic hose shops can get it for you and you will need 2 feet of 3/8" hose. There is a short piece down by trhe water pump, another one going behind the turbo from underneath, and the last one comes off the top of the turbo to the water pipe coming off of the T-stat housing. The factory hose is a well known leak point on the DMAX, and the PUROSIL hose is a wothwhile investment as it will most likely outlast the truck. As for the fuel lines I bought the pre-formed ones from GM for about $60 for the 5 hoses, but many have just used a good diesel grade fuel line on them. Some are 1/2" and the others are 3/8"(or 5/16" can't remember right now).

I'm just jealous, Good for you:D

Careful there Leo, the 6.5 gods might overhear you and visit you with Aces troubles when he professed a longing for something other than the 6.5 :D

Good luck with the new ride there Lance, you did refer the new owner to come in to become one of the 6.5 family members here I hope?
