Another question. I think my problem with the new transmission is the idle is to slow. What is the idle speed for both fast & curb idle for my 1995 Chevy 1 ton van with a 6.5l N/A diesel? Also I tried connecting a Mac tools scan tool & cannot get it to talk to the van. I know the scan tool works ok & I am wondering if there is a fuse for the OBD connector? Is there a fuse layout for the truck somewhere in here? Thanks
 
Just to let you know, the only "plug in systems" that can actually talk to the PCM on the 6.5 is the Tech-2 scanner(very expensive) and car code. Anything else can't do anything more than read codes.

What RPM's are you running right now on the Tach?

Not true. You need a Tech-I/II for bidirectional controls only, alot of other scanners will read data and read/clear codes.


Your van is mechanical IP correct? Do you have a TH-400(3L80) or a 4L80 trans?
 
Yes the van has the mechanical injection pump. The tranny is a 4L80e transmission. The MAC scanner did work on it when I had a '95 van 15 years ago when it was new. This one I just bought used.
 
With a mechanical pump dont you control idle with a screw or something? Or do you mean just when in gear? Can the TCM somehow increase idle when in gear? Mine idles as low as 546RPM, but is a function of PCM programming on a electonic pump.

Do you mean to say you have the wrong torque converter? Maybe the gasser version.

Snap on scanner MT 2500 also if fully capable of Bi-D comms with PCM just can't do a TDCO learn command, or individual injector pop test, MAC tool will also work, couple of other software tools other than car code will work also.

Tach rpm is from alt for dash meter, important to know is what the crank sensor reading is that is what goes to PCM Mech IP as Buddy say should be a mechanical adjustment for idle
 
Another important issue (before messing with anything else) is to measure your alternator pulley....if the alternator has been replaced, you more than likely have the small gasser pulley (2 3/8th diameter) and your dash mounted tach will be off by roughly 200 rpm's.

What 8th vin letter were you using with your scanner. I think you need to use a "P" for a mechanical van, IIRC.

Or try a 92-93 truck, vin "F".
 
I have a hand held tach with the stick on reflectors. I could try that on the engine but where would be the best place to stick it on to get the rpm"s? The crank pulley? I was using the letter G. The 8th letter in the vin is Y
 
If I remember, I'll check at work for what vin letter to use, I think you need a "P". The 92-93 truck vin "F" will work with a Snap-On 2500 and Tech-I/II, with the 94up mechanical van TCM's.


Stick the reflector on the harmonic balancer. My 92 and 93 trucks set @700rpm hot and 800rpm fast idle on the valve cover.
 
I'll try the MAC again tomorrow using the & try using "P" & "F". It's raining here now or I would go try the hand held tach on the harmonic balancer. SO that I will try tomorrow too. Thanks PS since I see all yours are TD's did you convert the older ones from N/A?

That's quite interesting I've never heard of those units before. I just looked up the MT2500:eek: I think I saw someone use something that looked like that before. No wonder he wouldn't let it out of his site! Seems to be about the same price range as the Tech 2. Learn something new everyday:thumbsup:

No, they were all factory turbo trucks. Just about all of your 3/4 and 1ton trucks were turbo'd after they come out with the 6.5TD in 92. I've only seen N/A trucks in half tons after 92, not saying they didn't build them, just very rare.

MT2500 "bricks" are pretty cheap now on ebay since Snap on new Modus tool has replaced the bricks
 
Well I bought a 3/4 ton chevy van with 6.5L N/A diesel new in '95 up here in Toronto. Used it for 5 years & then bought a 2000 Savanah with a 6.5L turbo diesel. Worst truck I owned. Lousy mileage as well as poorly built. Straded it & bought a 2005 Dodge Sprinter. Great van, great mileage lousy parts support. Blew a glow plug in September, spent $6K repairing now it's gone & I bought a $500.00 '95 chevy van again with a 6.5L N/A diesel. It gives me the best mileage other than the Sprinter than all the service vehicles I have bought in the past 25 years. Just needs some TLC to bring it back to snuff.
 
To be honest, if you don't need multi make capability and don't need OBD1 capability, and have a laptop Autoenginuity is a better deal than the MT2500.

X2 & IIRC the AE "professional" setup, is multi vehicle as well, cost a little more than single model but I think I'm gonna get it one if these days, my old laptop win 2000 is pretty heavy to lug about, & slow it has car code & VAG Com on it, I'm soon getting a new laptop and when that happens I'll upgrade to AE and latestst Vag-Com for my VW TDI. Prolly add in Engh Motors ODB-I software as well.

Used MT2500 was the "affordable" alternative back in day before laptop software tools were more than a passing thought
 
Well I have 3 OBDll readers but they are not backward compatible. The lastest is a Autolink which worked with the canbus on the Sprinter. My other 2 wouldn't talk to it. The autolink was only $120.00 up here.
