Rebuilding A 6.5 Diesel First Time Need Help

Whoever you talked to is wrong.....wasn't Lyndon was it?

No it was "Cam" at Lightspeed innovation's in reddeer. Well i still can't get the scan tool to work i really want to figure it out so i can see what codes are thrownsince the enigne light is on. Im going to try it on my bother's lap top tomorrow. It's been real cold here for the past 2 week's i fired the truck up this morning for the first time since the cold snap. I think it was -34 today? i donno but anyways it started up stayed right at that 650 rpm the whole time it warmed up untill i touched the throttle slightly and it jumped back up to that 900-1100 range, It's driving me bonker's can anyone tell me where the coolant temp senser is so i can try cross em before i change the damn harness over again??

make sure your computer has the drivers for the ALDL cable, for the USB prt. You can get the drivers off Engh Motors website too.

You can also get the codes the old fashioned way by putting a jumper across pin A and B of the OBD1 port, turn IGN to ON, and count the SES light flashes (can look up the sequence and what each code means). As long as you take the jumper out before trying to start the truck.

With the aldl cable plugged in, you have to go to the device manager and make sure the right driver is installed. You can find the correct driver on ENGH's website.

Coolant temp sensor is located in the coolant crossover tube that runs from the front of the right head to the front of the left hood. Follow the upper rad hose....it connects to the crossover. The sensor is more towards the passenger side on the tube...

Well i got the scan tool to work, aparently my computer was ****ed. Don't buy HP by the way. So the olny code i had was the ECT sensor circuit high. It was reading -34 and my transission has also had problems shifting into 4th since i put that harness in and i noticed the enigine is louder as well. The other wierd thing is even when my truck is at operating temp the glow plug light comes off an on 5 or 6 times when ever i start the truck. Another thing is i think i have a failing PMD the truck has just randomly died on me a few times i unplugged the PMD and plugged it back in and it fired up every time. I tryed using the one chris had mounted in the bumper but the truck wouldent even start when i first put the engine in so i have just been using the one that came off my doner truck. The last thing i half to say is the truck smokes alot more since the harness change i love my smoke but i think this might be almost hard on the engine. If there is anything anyone can think of before i change the harness back over this weekend just let me know. I finnaly got internet in my new place i can respond lot quicker now. Thanks

You need to resolve the coolant temp sensor issue. It is causing the GP light, the not shifting into OD, the noisy engine, and the smoke....

When the ECM believes that it is cold, it tries to go easy on the engine. Fix the sensor issue and your problems will disappear.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the PMD that was on the truck when I gave it to you.

Before changing the harness, use a paperclip instead of plugging in the sensor (jump the connector) and see what happens...

i aready swapped out the sensor for the spare i had there was no differnce. and i id the paperclip jump there was nothing.

Chad - if that made no difference, then there may be bad wiring to the connector...strip the wire loom back until you find it....

Will do Chris, I think i might go to the shop right from work tomorrow so i can get them valve cover's redone and let them dry over night. I will inspect the harness at the same time. Is there any marking's on these engine harnesses to see what year they came from?

Not that I am aware of.

I know that I made some splices into the ECT circuit a few years ago. I can't remember if it was on the truck you have, or the one I owned previous.

Pull back the loom and inspect it. I doubt that my soldering let go, but you never know with a multitude of removal/install procedures.

That means the line is broken somewhere, could be the wire or a pin in the connectors.

Do you know how to check continuity with an ohm-meter? You are already familiar with where the harness plugs in and we can get the pin numbers. You can use another harness or just solder/crimp another wire between the connectors.

Okay so i changed the valve cover gaskets on it lastnight and i can honestly say i never wanna do that again. I would rather tear apart my duramax and change em over the 6.5. I rarely throw tool's but lastnight was a damn nightmare. I even smached my knuckles and blead everywhere for foxcreek. But on a good note i pulled back the wiring loom on the ECT and sure as shit the wire was pulled out of the crimp. So i repaired it and re did the other one to be sure and it has never ran better. No engine codes it shifts properly, has good power and isent ideling through the damn roof! Thank's for everyone's help here!

Well blew the one oil cooler line on the way into town lastnight. Boy that was scary, since its christmas no parts are available. I managed to re mount the stock oil cooler that came with the truck with the 1997 lines. The lines and cooler were bigger on the 1997 engine. Did some ****** riggin and and combined both sets to get it to work with 4 hose clamps untill the new lines and cooler get in. FUN FUN FUN!

Very lucky. Most blown oil lines = blown engine or extensive damage. PMDcable. com or lubrication specialist sell kits with new lines and cooler. Never a worry after that.
