Rebuilding a 141

I think the new ones still have the brass coloring. The 6.5 i had the heads off on I painted all the rocker ends as i pulled them off because i didnt see a difference but have always heard the same thing about the brass end

I think the new ones still have the brass coloring. ...

Yup, I thought so, but while "shopping" at fleabay, I saw these ones, and noticed they don't have brass colored tips... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Chevy-6-2-6...et-16-1982-2002-/170902006171?forcev4exp=true

Also, what do you think of these lifters (Elgin part #HL2201) : http://www.ebay.com/itm/GM-5-7L-6-2...-Lifters-Set-16-/170898807021?forcev4exp=true .
They look similar to waht Rockauto sell for $198 a set (Sealed Power part # HT2104)
A set of HL84A ACDelco lifters is $578 ...

Well, my 599 short block (see post # 6) has arrived yesterday.

Haven't got the time to well inspect it, I just had a look at it, and it seems I made a good deal.

I will confirm upon deeper inspection, but it seems the pistons are almost new, no cracks in the mains, nor in the block.

Was it rebuilt? I bet I can't know except measuring cylinder bore, stock 103mm (4.06inch) First oversize is .25mm (thanks 3500GMC).
I have to find a micrometer for that, and fix if it an oversize one or not.

This week-end I will start parting an old engine to gather oil pan, valve covers, heads... and I will start dumb questins such as:
  • is there a top and bottom on valve springs or it doesn't matter?
  • I have received brand new push rods with one copper colored end : does this end goes to rocker or lifters? (rockers IIRC)
  • and some more...

Please bare with me : I want this engine to be well built, and so to become a trouble free one. My goal is to "set it and forget it"

and this can be useful for "newbies" ;)

Check out the block real good. Smooth cylinders and good main webs and you should be good.

Standard springs can go either end up or down, you pick it.
Coated (titainium nitride) pushrod ends go in the rocker, yes.

major part of the spare parts have arrived. If not too busy, I will start the rebuild in a week or so.

One thing I was wondering : the holes in the head gasket for coolant flow "from block to heads" are very tinny, almost as big as a pin hole.

My mechanic says it is a good idea to enlarge them and make them at least 2~3 millimeters wide so as to ensure proper collant circulation in the heads.

What do you think?

The majority of 'flow' is from front to rear, rear to front. The holes circled are to prevent air pockets. (as AK said, steam holes)

You want to keep the flow through the entire length of the head/block.. Don't mess with anything. Use an HO water pump.

OK Chris, ordered few bottles ;)

Another thing I was wondering : as I said, my engine will be cat yellow, but, would painting the block and heads affect cooling? Most of cooling is done by internal cooling circuit I know, but is the paint going to make a kind of "shell" trapping heat?

IIRC Barry said he used them and put them in the original clamshells with good results. He squished the clamshell in a vise to tighten them up.
