pump timing?

ok ill give that a try when i get back up to the garage... the joys of living 40 miles from my dads garage.. hopefully make a trip up tomorrow.. just ordered my egt gauge and have a boost gauge laying around the house hopefully can find all the parts to get it together

I wouldn't run 0W30 in the 6.5, maybe in the fuel, but not the crankcase. 5W-40 is pushing it for some of them, can increase blowby and oil consumption, or I'm currently running 10W-30 syn blend Rotella T5, seems to do alright, hasn't eaten any more oil than 15W-40 conventional.

You shouldn't run the truck while adjusting the timing, just move and tighten it then run it, shut it down and repeat if necessary. You have the mechanical injection pump, in 94 it went to electronic and timing is done with a scanner. So yours is more by ear and feel than later models.

Where'd you get that kenny, I use the gmtdscan but that thing looks cool and I've never seen one like that before.

No worky on a 93. 93 is the "good" year...No PMD. I scored it off eBay. I have been looking for a long time. All the ones I have ever found the probe was either missing or damaged. This one looks mint. Kent Moore also made one but they are even harder to find.
X2, Never adjust pump running. Unfortunately it's trial and error. The DB2's ain't all that finicky anyway.

I'm not sure if you meant sraight 30w diesel oil but if you did it works fine. I ran it in my 6.2's for years because I had Detroits and used to buy the stuff by the drum so one size fit all as 2 strokes don't like Multi grade.

Not bad...Wonder if it's a handshaker...I don;t like bodylifts though. These trucks have enough trouble keeping cool without offsetting the radiator. rip the bodylift out, and do a Straight axle conversion and that would be a kick ass truck...

ok ill just get rid of the 0w30. dad used it cause it made his truck start good in the winter.. but ill just go return it and get 5w40 synthetic. and im going too head up to the grage later ill keep you guys posted on the pump timing and if it changes my problem.

pissed now drove all the way to the garage and it started pouring and i couldn't get the truck in the garage.. dads short-box got the space not me, so ill be going back up on wednesday to give it a try again

What does your truck do to run bad?

High miles means the chain stretches and would be a reason to mess with the timing. But I have not read anything to make me want to touch the timing yet and get what result? I guess I missed why the truck runs bad and what we are chasing on it.

On the subject of timing: The DB2 is famous for the advance piston sticking. With the engine running look at the injection pump on the passenger side you will see a lever that goes to a circular pin sticking out of the side of the pump. Using a long screwdriver press the bottom of the lever so the pin goes in. The engine should stumble and slow down. This verifies the piston isn't stuck.

well before he turned up the injection pump it ran great. he then changed a valve cover gasket when he did he turned the injection pump up, but when he was putting the injection lines back on he forgot to hook one of them up. i hooked it back up and started it up and it ran better i just wasn't sure if the timing had to be adjusted when the pump was turned up.

i just ordered a egt gauge and boost gauge so i'm gonna hook them up when they come in. whats a suggestion on egt placement?

Should not have to re-time the IP as result of "turning it up", can you explain how he "turned it up" ? As for EGT probe, I prefer the exhaust manifold just below the turbo inlet, some get the type of probe that clamps into the crossover pipe.

To clarify ran good, changed valve cover gasket & turned up IP, found disconnected line-tightened it...... now it runs good or bad........; or good with a little more performance now & you are just wanting to know if IP timing needs to be changed?

What are boost levels ? if you don't know that ? you should not be making any adjustments until you are gauged with boost & EGT to know effect of the changes, you are probably okay with what you have now just don't hammer it until getting the gauges.

Any smoke ??? if so when ? start or at WOT or both? if smoking what is color of smoke?

Ok thats where ill put the probe. and it runs good now, i was just wondering if you were supposed to adjust the pump timing with adjusting the db2 pump.

I dont know what my boost levels are right now but im not driving the truck either. i bought it from the kid just after he turned the adjustment screw up. and its only been driven like 9 or 10 mile with it adjusted. as for smoke there is a little blue smoke on start up and then it turns to a whitish gray smoke. there is no black smoke at all when revving it up.. before he adjsted the pump he said it used to smoke black.
