PMD relocation pics?

Anyone have pics of their relocated PMD?

Specifically, where in the bumper have they been relocated?

Mine is hanging off the support fot he upper rad hose in the flow from the rad fan (PO job). My concern with bumper locations is the exposure to weather IE: rain, snow, etc...

anyone?
 
Run a small bead or RTV around the PMD where it meets the heat sink, any exposed screw holes should get a dab too.

You're in Canada.put it right there my friend.
no worry about rain snow or muck.
on a heat sink ofcourse and in the fender.Cover with a piece of styrofoam to keep the engine heat off it.

I mounted mine right under the bumper, center left, just like Bill Heath told me to.

4 years and 140,000 km - all the salt and slush that Calgary and southern Alberta could throw at it, no problems.

I watched one hooked up to a running truck - dropped into a 5 gallon pail of water and the truck never missed a beat.

I also watched one, removed from the heat sink and hooked up to a running truck, start to smoke in under 5 minutes.

No reason to think that Canadians face any different problems with them than our American brethern... if anything, the big temperature swings we get are the biggest issue.

Mounting them under the bumper is safe. Trust us. Been there, done that, bought the shirt :D

That was he way I got it. PO had it relocated....
 
$549... includes PMD, Extension harness, Heat sink, mounting bolts...

... and 7 years of no-questions-asked replacement warranty.

You're out $75, Simon, because you used your own PMD (mine was dead and I needed a new one - minimum cost at the time = $320, add in the cost of the extension cable and the heat sink, and let's say another $150 for 7 yr warranty. You also have tools, aptitude, and the benefit of lots of knowledge about these engines... for people who have those things, there is always a cheaper way.

Incidentally, at the time, here in Alberta, the GM Mechanics were replacing the PMD by pulling the IP and putting a new $320 pmd back on the IP. They told me that heat sinks didn't work. That process was close to $1300, labour included. And no warranty.


At the time, there were no other options, other than Steaksauce (same price, crappy workmanship, bad location, no warranty) Kennedy (same price, no warranty), and SSDiesel (cheaper, but bad design and location, also no warranty).

If you think that's too much to spend, put in something cheaper. Design your own. Try something unique.

Heck, you can probably do that 2 or three times, by the time you have paid what I paid to do it right the first time and have no more problems.

Leroy offers a similar warranty at a similar price.
 
2 reasons:

a) Because it's under the hood. When you shut the engine off, the fan quits blowing air, and the inside of the hood actually heats up... being in there with those hot manifolds, etc isn't good for things.

b) Because your pmd generates its own heat, and it can't shed it unless the gradient between its heatsink and the surrounding air is steep... yes, the fan is blowing right on it. Hot air. The pmd will generate heat faster than it can remove it through convection.

X2 what Jim said.
I know its hard to believe, but it actually gets hotter there than being on the IP. Depending on your tstats you have 180-195* air blasting your pmd in that location. Ive done alot of testing and anywhere in the engine compartment is to hot.
I will say the new PMDs are all pretty good and would probally survive in that location, but why risk it when its so easy and cheap to bumper mount it. It was the old black Stanadyne that gives the most problems.
Ive sold over 3000 cables so far and not a single cable has ever had a problem.
