Paul's side of the story.
Right on schedule, Steve arrived in Big Red and I knew the truth was about to be revealed.
The trucks are what you see in the signature blocks.
Big Red is a 1997 RC K-2500 LB with a fairly stock HX-35 equipped 6.5 fitted with a 4:56 (grizzly locker) rear end and 37" BFG Mud Terrain KM2's. Heath built the tune specifically for the truck and turbo. Mine is a 1996 EC K-1500 SB with a not very stock Super-84 turbo equipped 6.2 hybrid fitted with a 3:73 rear end spinning 30" (OEM) BFG A/Ts.
We drove out to a section of road I had felt would allow us to run them wide open without being a threat to anyone other than ourselves.
I mounted a Go-Pro to the front bumper with a suction mount that should have been attached to the windshield. More on that later. Or should I say, "moron that later?" Owing to the many discussions, I angled the camera so that it would keep him in frame until I could build up boost and speed to overtake him.
The first run proved to be a lung full for a hapless jogger closing in on us as we lined up and counted down and launched. Fortunately the wind was blowing away from him but I'd have loved to have seen his face when both of us lit the ground cloud makers. As expected, Steve launched while I accelerated. It took a bit but I did catch him without too much trouble but it took a little longer than either of us expected. The fact that I have the slowest reaction time to 3-2-1-GO in the country didn't help but the truth is, that truck just flat gets off the line. My wife says his smokes more on launch although neither of us will ever be credited with driving Clean Diesel trucks.
Second run was about the same but the jogger was gone. Another thing became apparent and that was the section of road chosen wasn't what I had hoped. I was using the on-coming lane and the terrain didn't provide a safe enough view to give us comfortable runs. So, same road, 15 miles south, straight, flat and long. Off we went. When we got there I went out to reset the Go-Pro only to find it was now a Gone-Somewhere!
Maggie did a couple of passes with us using her iPhone in hand held mode from the Passat (TDI…clean diesel!) as we scooted down the road. I finally got a good RT but still had to catch up. We made a final pass rolling at 30 mph and accelerating. Now I'm the bad guy with the most smoke and still having to play catch up.
We then went on a long search of the weeds and gullies and after about an hour, found the Go-Pro a little worse for wear along with the case and mount all scattered for about 40 yards along the side of the road. Camera still works, the files were intact, and we had worried about how we were going to convince you guys that we actually did make a few fun runs but, the camera was lost. Ya'll can be a tough crowd at times.
Conclusion. Steve's truck is quicker and it takes getting into the unlawful zone to catch and pass him. So, as I thought, for the daily driver desiring to be somewhat lawful, Steve's got the quicker of the two trucks. As for grin factors, definite tie. This morning was a lot of fun and worth repeating. I'll have to work on my RTs though.
Steve's edit.
There is nothing I can say that Paul hasn't already covered. It was a riot and I couln't wipe the ear to ear grin from my face. I may take the launch from Paul even with his split second reaction time :rof: but in all truth once his truck has found the air it needs it pulls harder and faster than you would believe and it wasn't long at all before I was in his rear view.
I cant put words together the way Paul can so I'll just leave the videos and pictures to describe the outcome
