Optic Sensor Fail > New IP

I pulled the optic sensor. Not to familiar with the whole thing, but I am now. So apparently the pump has a ring like the rings of Saturn that rides through a slot in the optic sensor. The optic sensor reads through holes in that ring. Well, I discovered that I'm missing section of that ring. The attached pic shows the missing section. Looks like it's time to call Conestoga diesel for a new IP.

I'm guessing that you weren't in there taking the OS out for grins and giggles so, what was going on?
I've only had the OS out of an IP once and it was a long time ago so I can't say what's supposed to look like what in there. I looked for the pictures I took at the time and, of course, failed to get those shots.
FWIW, my current IP is the Stanadyne G2 DS4 831-5521S with the hardened internals for ULSD.

Hard for the optic sensor to see the interruptions when nothing is there to see.

If you are getting a "built" pump for power the they certainly are the big dog on the block. If you want stock (of course hardened internals like mentioned for ulsd) call Leroy and see what he can order. 99% sure he said he gets new IPs.

I believe for the warranty to be good, you have to start with new injectors also.

Found the missing piece of ring on top of the injector lines at the IP. Must have blown out when I shot compressed air in there.

Going with stock DS4. I've already talked with Conestoga. I will make sure hardened and will get new injectors.

I can get the brand new DS4 5521S with the hardened internals for ULSD for $1600, no core, two year warranty and new PMD attached.

I took an IP completely apart just to see try and see how they work. You should consider tearing into that thing. Look for some corrosion and wear on then FSD rod and timing piston mechanism in bottom of IP. See if you find any water or such in bottom of IP. Also look at the plungers and rotor etc for appreciation of machining and see not much way to get more out of a DS pump. That optic ring is thinner than paper almost. first one I have seen posted about coming apart. Do you think it corroded in half? Should not be anything to rip it or wear it through as I did not think anything touches it.

Keep us posted I want to see if you feel a big power increase.

I'm happy that I could diagnose it. Not happy it took me so long. Happy that I have my son's '94 as a back up. His Suburban has 286K miles on and just keeps on going.

I need software to time it. Does Autoenginuity cover ABS and transfer case codes?

If they do reman with hardened parts, then I'll go that route. $1600 is like 40% of the truck's value.

Ive played with AE a little and couldn't find the ABS system on it. None of my vehicles are 4x4 so never even thought to look. What function are you looking for? I'll check on Monday if I remember :)

I also have one of the best pump builders out there on hand. The upgraded hardened parts can be installed. I'll also get with him for a price.

4LO issues in this thread and Fermanator says you can pull codes:

ABS light is on and I need to pull codes.

Individually those are worth $100 each to avoid going to the stealership.

Yes price on reman with hardened parts.

Here you go. Yes it's a chinese copy, but there has been ALOT of positive reviews on them(Even the authentic ones were made in china). The ONLY issue with them was if you tried updating one via the GM dealer software, it would brick it, but this shouldn't ever be an issue as GM released the last update for them in 2012, and they stopped using them in 2012, so it's a dead platform to them essentially.

It says.....
Notice:

1. It Can Only Support GM Cars, No Trucks

I talked with Conestoga and they outsource their DS4 pump remanufacturing to DTech and Flight Safety. They all get the upgraded ULSD parts. One year warranty. Not necessary to replace the injectors as they're pretty tough.

The commented that the DS4 pump typically fails due to some sort of electrical issue typically in the sensor. When I mentioned that the optic sensor wheel broke, they said that was pretty common.

Eeew! My reman'd IP lasted just under 5K. Only *new* injection parts go into the Burb now.

In terms of power, my stock IP (ULSD compliant version) is getting 245 / 394 with the slushbox on the dyno, so that is a pretty good set of numbers for the 6.5.

I'd jump on Leryo's new ULSD compliant IP as local shops here want a bit more money than that. Sure, it is a good chunk of money compared to the current value of our vehicles, but the point is that this is more of an investment toward future use (and avoiding a car payment).

OK my pump guy said he would want your IP (not a core). He is saying max price of $1600 because if rebuild gets close to that he would recommend just buying brand new. A rebuild "should" be less than $1600 though. He takes each one apart and diagnosis the problem and fixes it correctly. He has complete test stands and is a Stanadyne authorized shop.

BTW Dtech does not use ULSD hardened parts. They are a mass mill shop. I can sell Dtech myself but don't because I don't want the tech assistance nightmare like you are having now.
