OK. Need help. Swapping a TH400 out and NV4500 in OBS truck.

Aces, from what I can tell the slave cylinder on the 93 uses some o-ring sealed push-in style fitting, not a flare fitting.

If you're still working on tcase compatibility it sounds like a NP241 from a 88-91 Suburban/Blazer will bolt up to the NV4500.

Yes on the slave. I may have to take the line from the 93 and have a new end put on to match the master from the 86. Didn't think of using the NP241 but from what I am told above the 208 has the same bolt pattern. Guess I'll find out soon....Now the hard part...finding pedals.

never have. really need to though, 3-4 isnt perfect on the 99. might as well tear into the 96, as it is arguably the worst one I have ever experienced. how many times does a 6.5L get towed off the interstate for a locked up transmission? I think it will be fun! :)

well pedal setups are getting scare for these trucks. I found a set of pedals from an 86 at a junky in Rhode Island. Cost me 150$...Damn...Know how many of these I tossed back in the day... If I only knew. Donor truck should be here Sunday. The other thing I was thinking about was the shifter linkage for the TC since the NV4500 had it on the drivers side but Dave reminded me that the 86 has the shifter bolted to the floor not the tranny so I should be able to make it work. I am really excited.

Kenny i have a trans jack attachment for a floor jack here if you want to borrow it. It works great for automatic trans removal. Not as good for manual trans install, but i just used it to pull the SM465 out this week.

Thanks Dave. There is a HD truck shop up the street that I am freinds with. They have a big one for doing HD trucks I'm gonna see if I can get my hands on.

I know if i shift my SM465 too quick it'll grind. I drive it like a heavy duty truck, slow in between shifts 90% of the time, mainly because it is a HD trans.

The NV4500 in my dad's dodge doesn't like to be shifted too quick either.

Any chance there's air in the system? That'll cause havok with the clutch pedal feel and with shifting.

I do believe that there is air in the system. another possibility is the clutch fork and pivot ball may be wearing. I would try changing oil first, maybe it is the wrong oil.

does it grind going into 1st or reverse when you are at a dead stop?

The couple -4500s I've shifted are definitely not car transmissions. They kinda hang up when I tried to shift them fast; 97 Ram 3500 12V, and David's 99 Silverado.

No, Goes right in. GMguy said what I already feared, someone probably put the wrong oil in it and wiped the synchros. 1500$ for a rebuild...oouch. If the rest of the tranny looks fine can I just change the synchros ? I ordered the rebuild video from Quad 4x4 to see if I want to tackle this and what tools I'll need. If the cost of the tools and parts exceeds having it done then I may be better off sending it out. I doubt I'll do another one.

Mine grinds going into 2nd and reverse from a stand still sometimes, what does that mean?

It takes time to shift the big old truck too but I'm getting better at it, it really helps to try and match the RPMs. I have to slowly ease it into gear if I don't keep the RPMs from completely dropping off. I shift around 2300 for 2-3 and 3-4 and that puts next gear catching at ~1400 rpm seems the best for not lugging it. 4-OD at 2200 puts next gear at ~1700 IIRC. I dont use 1st unless I am chugging through a parking lot or getting a trailer rolling.

I used to just grab and grind Ol' Blue as fast as I could back in the day, no wonder it went through trannies like candy.

I done a 4500 out of a dodge, they're not that hard to do,nothing special for tools either.
Just be carefull prying on the gear teeth, they are brittle and chip easy. And be carefull pulling the sincros apart, them little springs fly away in all directions like a pinball game:eek:

Now if you would wanna do a NV 5600,you'll need a press and make lots of adaptors(what a nightmare that was!)but i got'r done as well.

Castrol Syntorq LT 75w85w GL-4

Dodge p/n 4874459
GM p/n 12346190
the smallest you can get it from castrol is 16 gallon drums. quad4x4.com repackages it in 2qt bottles, iirc.

Wrecker also can get you the Amsoil MTG gear lube. I would find you the link, but I am at home on dialup, so wrecker can get you that info. dad and I each have a case waiting to stick in, but we have to fix leaks before we do a change! :) so I believe in it, but I wont put it in till I change the output seal.

I would only trust the Castrol and the Amsoil, as we used the royal purple, and were not impressed.

good luck!

As I said in his other thread, I was not impressed with the the Amsoil compared to the Castrol stuff. It's much more notchy and nosier IMO.
