Ok here is the deal...all suggestions welcome!

For grins (mine is wayyyy older) : http://www.valuetesters.com/Optical-Tachometer.php
Best tach is your ears, if you can hear a difference in RPM there is a difference.

If you can hear a different cranking speed you had best just park it till you can fix it. Worst case your dragging starter goes full brush failure and you walk/tow it/ change starter in nasty cold wet place. Been there done that will never ignore slow cranking again. (I was lucky and had friends that helped push it into the industrial shop it quit at and let me store till parts could be found and work on it there.)

Even just the front pulled into a garage with a heater on is better than outside in the wind.

What do your local shop charge to "rent" a lift or flat out change the starter for you?

Could be a cable...

Thanks for the replies everyone.

The truck has been starting fine as long as I keep it plugged in, I located a place at work to do that.

The Tahoe is another story, it starts up fine for about 2 secs then dies. I will not be able to start checking that out until Friday or Saturday.

I'm sure that I will report back with my findings or more questions...

Thanks again,
Greg

Greg, if you want to do a wrenching day between Chrismas and New Year in my heated shop in Sandwich just say the word. I'm off the whole week and you would be welcome to do that. I'm a good mechanic with a VERY FULL set of tools so we could have at it. Would be a good GTG for us anyhow. Might even get a few of the other locals over while we're at it.

Like my son "Colbythekid" said: starter, Starter, STARTER! If it sounds like it's straining and you know the batteries are good, pull the starter and have it tested, especially if it has 215k miles on it.

Mike,

That sounds wonderful!

I will send you a PM...

Thanks Mike!!!

How are the glows cycling after it starts? Are you getting repeating WTS as the glows cycle? I had the same problem with starting sounded like it was gonna die for about 10 seconds and then would idle out. Checked the glows and replaced the air intake and coolant temp. senser. Made a huge difference and the burb fires up good now. It was 9 degrees here this morning, not plugged in and no problems starting. Just my 2 cents.

If you havent already, can hook up GMTDScan and see that when the engine is cold and outside air is cold that the CTS and IAT are both reporting cold values that seem reasonable.

How is the Tahoe to restart after it dies?
Try jumping the lift pump prior to starting maybe. Is it possible it has an air leak that bleeds down a little. Maybe running the lift pump prior to starting would remove the air?
If it starts and stay running after doing this it might give a clue about something. Our Tahoe developed a leak at the drain T. I noticed while running there was diesel coming out around the barb.
A small leak in the right place could bleed off a little but not affect the way it runs much.

Check the fuel filter & bleeder to make sure it is sealed completely

Oh CHIT!

Yea the 6.5 gods are a raining down on me. Must have pissed off one of them :???:

The Tahoe will get looked at Friday...

The truck started this morning, but not real well.:nonod:

The truck is plugged in here at work right now.

Thanks Gents!

Sounds like maybe that jump starter took out a few glows, like you were thinking, or the controller isnt passing current to them. GMTDScanTech can show you what the glow plug voltage is during the glow cycle. If it its less than 10V then you probably have a controller or battery/cable issue. If it maintains over 11V then you probably have some dead glows.

That and cold fuel doesnt atomize very well, so thats another thing with running rough when cold. So a cold IP with fuel in it and the lines isnt getting squirted real well. Not sure the condition of your injectors, but for some people that will only make it worse until it warms up.

Thanks for the suggestions...everyone :>)

The truck is running great after it starts & today I picked up a new Remy starter from Advance Auto & ordered 8 new Bosch GP's for it. It is starting as long as I keep it plugged in. The weather is supposed to let up a little it was pretty chilly this morning here about zero.

The Tahoe I don't know yet what has it in a tither...but please keep the suggestions coming...

Much appreciated!

If you want to have a starter rebuilt there is a top notch rebuilder in DeKalb. All the local farmers have been going there for many years. I've had a couple of starters and generators done by them and they are as good or better than new. I'm sure we could find a way to get it to them since I go up that way all the time to the other place. Just an option...

Mike,

I will have a starter & also the other alternator, so that may very well be an option I will take you up on.

I purchased the starter today on my way home. Actually I paid for it on line saved 20% that way & no tax, but it still ended up costing me $255. It's a new starter not a reman, name brand is Remy, with a lifetime 1 time replacement guarantee. Hope I never have to use it...

If Barry hasnt hooked you up with a decent priced set of nice new large (0AWG) gauge battery and starter wires get in touch with him. Will make a good difference too. I have never had a cranking problem in my temperate climate, but I know two batts could be spinning them a lot easier than it does. If youre down into the starter anyway, replacing the battery cables isnt so bad.

Let us know how the Glows in the truck ohm out, from spade to threaded body of glow should be 1 ohm or less. If more then they have degraded, if a lot more then they arent doing anything for you.
