Oil cooler line time..... Opinion?

There are 2 different types of lines.
My cooler fittings were different than the ones you showed,
would need an adapter like this, with the O-ring
fcm2608.jpg

Yep mine were the same style as yours, using the fittings that I suggest you in fact create the seal differently too how the original lines made their seal i.e on the inside. The seal gets created on the outside edge of the female fitting in the oil cooler. If you look carefully at the pics I posted you can just make out the O-Ring between the brass nut of the adapter fitting and the black aluminium nut on the cooler.

The one thing as I have mentioned in prior posts as linked to in my previous post in this thread is that you have to shave a bit of the fitting so that it screws in all the way so that the seal can get made.

Cheers

I wen't through the same process. I knew I could come up with a better solution/design for less money but it would require me to run around and chase parts all day.

I settled on a kit from Greg about 3 or more years ago. Still no leaks or other oil line related issues. The lines were a pain to route IIRC, but that's not necessarily the kits fault.

I also went with the larger H7B oil cooler and kept the standard cooler that came with the kit as a future transmission cooler or for another project. I figured oil squirters would benefit from additional oil cooling.

I like that Idea of the larger cooler. 11 x 11 x 1 1/2.

What is the size of the factory cooler? Almost half that size?

Did Greg's kit plumb perfectly into the HB7 cooler?

I bought an 11x11" cooler with an electric fan attached. I was planning on mounting it under the truck & making lines to fit.
I procrastinated too long on that project. It's -30 F right now, and I just need it to stop leaking, so I bought Leroys' kit instead.

Greg's kit uses pipe thread fittings, where the stockers use those o-ring jobbie's. Can't think of the size right now but 5/8 pipe thread comes to mind.

Ironic its -30 out and your working on your oil cooler :)

I saw that cold blob on the map on the news. Coldest spot in the world right now. I thought of you guys up there:) THen wished it would come here and bring snow ::thumbsup:

I may go with the kit if I still have the truck the next time it's
time to change it, I didn't preorder, cause I thought I could find
what I needed, then I was pressed for time when I couldn't.

At -30 it will not snow, only ice fog. Ice fog sux to drive in, especially if you have a large factory assisting in the production of it. It would have to warm up to dump some snow. Good old Fairbanks, AK!

Yeah, I considered temporarily plugging the lines & dealing with the cooler when it warms up, but I'm such a procrastinator that I'd be driving around in July with no cooler.:rolleyes5:
It has been snowing a little bit every night, but DCash is right, you won't accumulate much at these temps. No ice fog yet, and it's supposed to be above 0* Monday.
Now I just need to get over to my brother's shop to get the cooler installed. ( The CCLB doesn't come close to fitting in my garage. )

I have seen it snow at -40 rare though

I found a good picture by BobbieMartin to show the stock size of the oil cooler (hope he doesn't mind):

The H7B will extend all the way to the top and bottom. The top mounting holes on the cooler will more or less match up to the top holes on the supporting bracket that runs across the top. I fabricated a mounting bracket out of sheetmetal and painted it black for a factory installed look.

Matt, you had asked the dimensions of the stock oil cooler; I went out immediately to measure mine, and promptly forgot to reply.

It's about 8x11 in.

Installed, it's hard to measure exactly, and what are the parameters; to the cooler edge, to the mounting tabs outer edge?

It appears its thinner also.

Did the SS Lines from the Kit directly thread into the HB7 without adapters of any sort?

Matt, on my kit the SS lines thread onto a fitting (1/2" pipe to 1/2" jic/flare) that is theaded into the cooler.

I made my own setup. Get a Long TruCool M7B cooler. This is exactly the same oil cooler that comes from the factory, but has ½" NPT fittings. Then go to an Earls, Aeroquip or whatever dealer and buy some -10 hose. I needed about 9 feet of hose. BTW, -10 AN is 5/8 hose. You will need to get hose ends and fittings for the oil cooler & the block. I used 90 degree fittings in the block with straight hose ends and straight fittings on the oil cooler with 45 degree hose ends, but you may want to do it differently. Its easy to assemble the hose & ends. Then you are set to go. I think I had about $200 in my set up.

The 45 degree hose ends are a much better way to go than trying to get the 45 degree fittings at the right angle to get the hoses hooked up. I wrecked a cooler trying to get the fitting lined up. Then there is the part of if it's tight enough to not leak if in that position. Are you listening Greg and Leroy?
