New to diesels and tooj on a 6.5 turbo diesel project

when you put it back, did you use a gasket or some sealant or both? I'm sure some coolant found it's way into the oil pan with the cover removed. that's normal

the timing gears for the IP only go on one way. the chain is basically the same as any old small block chevy. align the marks to TDC and install. the outer gear for the other gear to the IP has a keyed slot and the upper gear has the dowel pin, both also have marks to align them too. not too difficult.

as long as when you installed the IP. the gear didn't move or you put it back in the same teeth alignment the old IP had. you should be good. That gear times the IP to fire at the end if the intake stroke for each cylinder.

Here is a pic of how the IP gear goes. it has dots to be aligned with each other. others here can better explain if the engine needs to be at TDC or as long as the two line up.

I'm no expert, but I would think as long as you didn't remove the lower gear, lining up the top gear with the mark it should be good when installing the IP.

You have to align the first set of gears and torque the bolts. Then you forget those marks are there and pay attention only to the second set when you do those.

Yes a little coolant into the oil happens no matter how careful sometimes.
Just oil change and move on.

Smell that white smoke in exhaust asap. If it smells like coolant then that becomes priority #1. If not a coolant smell then ignore it until these other issue is done.

If you have to adjust timing by moving the ip position- NEVER EVER move it with the engine running.

On the subject of converting to db2- probably best to focus on the ds4 for now. If you decide to spend $1500 and do it- then ok. Usually people do it before buying a new ds4- they buy a new db2 instead and eat the cost of the other parts as investment for less headaches.

just to verify, were you able to select the device in the GMTD setting?

on the device it self, followed the instructions to combine the RX and TX wires together into a single wire out and connect the ground as a separate single wire going out. this gives you two wires to connect into the truck's PCM connector?

with the two wires going into the PCM connector, the RX/TX wire is to pin M and the ground is on pin A?

there is also a pin jumper on the device it self that needs to be in the "3v3" position like the pic below.

Yes fuel you will need!

before we get too far into things. what did you determine on the smoke. maybe even post a video of how it's currently running and the amount of smoke that's going out the tail pipe. what it smells like too.
