new to diesels and this page

right now, my biggest question is what have you done with the pmd/fsd?? that is the biggest proactive maintenance item. I also would recommend an egt gauge, mine is in Heath's xover.

btw, welcome, and how did u find this site?

1st.? I tried to put the info on my sub in but don't know if I did it right. 2nd ?.I was looking for info to trouble shoot some problems that the truck had. I saw ssd and kept looking and stumbled onto this site and started reading and two weeks later I knew this was the place for me. The people here are genuine and I'm the same when it comes to helping people with their cars. I've been a wrench for 20 yrs. I'm new to diesels and you guys are great.

Welcome!!
My brother just bought a 94 Sub. It has a bad head gasket. He got it cheap!!

I'm looking at a 94 with a blown motor for 600. do you think it's worth it. everything else about it is mint including paint and interior.Look at it under craigs list augusta. ga. he said he'll take 750 but I think if I go with the cash he'll come down to 600. Oh has dent on the tailgate.

And I would like to ask anyone out there if they know someone with an alcoa LTS 8 lug wheel part #167031 for sale. I have one with a crack near the bead and would like to replace it instead of buying different style rims.

I was wondering if any one could tell me what the avg. temp should be w/egt installed in the c/o pipe. Also trans temp. if possible. 95 sub running 10/12 lbs. boost.

My EGT pre turbo in pass. manifold is 450-500f at 60-65mph running empty.
Trans. temp. is about 140f also empty. Ambient temps are below freezing.
Boost is about 2-3psi at those speeds.

That's about the boost i have at that speed also. Thanks. Just trying to get in the ballpark. This is the firt 6.5 I have owned . Just installed the pyro/trans gauge today and wanted to know what to look for.

I took it out today and boy the egt is like a tach. Under full throttle going from 65 to 85mph. it went from 450 to 1000 in about 8 sec. When I go thru fancy gap with my camper am I going to have any issues. That will be in july when it's alot hotter than it is now. What is the max sustained temp I can run for 10 or 15 min. BTW, It was at 10lbs. boost the probe is in the driver side c/o. I don't want to blow this thing up. It run's like brand new not like day two. Am I running lean or is this normal. It comes right down when the foot comes up. It only goes that high when the pedal is to the floor. 3/4 and it's at about 850 or 900.

Get your sig filled out so we know what mods are done and what your driving. There is no rich/lean ratio in diesel engines. Just add fuel. Only becomes black if not enough air to mix with, resulting in partial burn, soot.

You can never have too much air. You get to the point of diminishing returns though, where the extra work required to make boost (air) isn't being utilized because you're not demanding enough fuel to use it all up.

It's all about getting enough fuel in there. Thats why Diesel engines ABSOLUTELY LOVE turbo's to the point where they suck without em.

But isn't it possible to run lean if you fool the comp, and raise boost and not get the proper fuel signal or is it sent via something else.[/QUOTe

I don't think its even possible to run lean. You can overfuel, as we all know results in soot, but can never have too much air in the mix, under normal circumstances of course, to prevent combustion. You're compressing the mix at a very high compression ratio. The air will always compress, and the diesel will always combust.

Fooling the comp is mainly to get a little more boost out of a vacuum controlled wastegated turbo I believe. Just a resistor on the map sensor making it always think there is less atmospheric pressure (boost).

I'm also wondering about your sustained EGT temps this summer. Any further thoughts on how he might keep these down? I'll be pulling a 28foot camper real soon and my be looking at the same kind of situation. Do you just back off the throttle and get into the slow lane while the gassers pass us? <hate the thought of that!>

As far as the trans temps go I spoke with a GM trans guy and he told me that you don't want it running up over 210 to 220. Any sustained temps above 220 or if you hit 280 just drive it right to the tranny shop for a rebuild when(and if) you get home. Does this sound right to the rest of you?
