New Battery experiences please share

Deka was real popular for marine batts.
The ones in my CUCV actually have removable caps to fill them with water. when's the last time ya seen that.

Now these are batteries. Don't make em like that anymore. I don't think they even had "group #s" back then. I didn't see any on them. All I know is the coldest friggin day this truck will crank without issue. 24v is the way to go.

I was in Midas today getting oil change on my company car they do our fleet maint. and noticed Midas carries Duralast for their batts I have been very satisfied with mine, I had a set 2 mos ago @ 2 years 1 of the 2 was not fully charging, they replaced the pair with new.

Another set in the burb went I was at pro-rate maybe 5 years into it, there was enough residual pro rate in the pair that I only had to pay the pro-rated price on one so 2 replacements for less than price of 1 new after 5 years.

IIRC they are made by Johnson Controls same mfr of many brands of battery with just different label on them. I run the Gold 1000 CCA battery.

One thing missing from premature battery death discussions are dirty gnds and batt cables :) alternator can't keep the batts healthy if they can't get the juice to them fully.

Yep, Johnson Controls makes some good stuff, -Exide does as well. True story about mediocre connections, -they never do any good at all.

I have ALWAYS had excellent luck with the Sears Die Hard Gold's, -I used to use them on some of the crawlers and backhoes when I was doing equipment maintenance for a general contractor years ago, -they worked great, and even though the equipment would sometimes sit for long periods between jobs, -they always started, -which made my life easier as the equipment guy.

Kenny, -what exactly are those things?? Are those Deka's? Do tell!! Deka makes the batt's in our electric forklift at work, -they are super reliable, -(of course our shop is heated, so they never see below 60F). Sometimes the guys run the damn thing into the ground, -barely able to move. I lecture them and ream their a$$es about deep cycling them. Those batteries really do very well, and we have yet to kill them, -and they are old.

I have to agree about 24V, -there's a reason the military uses it, -certainly a lot less finicky when it comes to connections and stuff, -the extra voltage gets it done.

Here is a quote from a forum member there that worked for Deka batteries.

"There's a very good chance that any battery you buy is made by DeKa, even Johnson Controls. I've even seen Exide labels in the plant.
All the names Fred mentioned are DeKa batteries rebranded. Not every battery in that brands line are DeKa though.
The guy that owns the company pronounces the name Deeka, it's a combination of his and his origional partner's first names. DeLight and Karl.
Interesting also was the warranty claims. When I left DeKa about five years ago they were running about 10% for Exide and only a few tenths of a percent for DeKa."

I have no idea who makes them. They are conceivably to the best of my knowledge the original batteries and the truck is a 1986. I don't know who made them for the military. They are both 12v wired in Series making 24v. I have not seen servicable batteries in many many years.

Kenny those batteries are friggin huge! They must have 1200 CCA a piece at the least. Those are the batts that take the special trays the military uses. Too bad i couldn't fit those in mine. I'd hunt down a set in a heartbeat.

If those ever start to die on you i have access to a battery charger here with a "desulfate" option that has brought back many a battery from death and beyond. Last one i brought back had 0.05V when i started. Last i checked it was at 12.6 and ~ 6-700 CCA.

All my 6v ag batteries are serviceable, and most low maintenance ones have covers that can be removed.

Some tractor batteries are similar to the ones in your pics Kenny.

The cool thing about them is I can dump them, wash them out and put new acid in. If the plates aren't junk. IDK but those batts are very old and start perfectly. I am not sur ethey can even be gotten anymore. Most CUCV's I have seen the batts were replaced with standard Civy ones.

I have an intermittent starting problem. Van usually fires right away, once & a while it does not fire easily (warm or cold). I had year old group 78, 675 CCA, AC Delco batteries that load tested perfect but after not much crankin would slow down somewhat and then the 6.5 would never start with a slower crank speed.
I bit the bullet and bought two Sears Platinum AGM batteries (made by Odyssey), they have 880 CCA and a lot of reserve for the 34/78 size. Now cranking does not slow down. Expensive but no other choices for that power rating in that size - can't fit bigger in the van. They are worth considering if you need their performance.

Napa 72's or 84's. I got 3 years out of them. Forgot to monitor electrolyte level and exposed the plates on one, junked'm. I cranked the you know what out of them last winter while diagonsing the busted crank. That probably boiled most of the electrolyte during that exercise. crapp!

I keep my camper in Rhode Island for the Summer so I got my Platinums in your neighborhood, Sears in Warwick. Regular price was about $189 each but there was a Sears Direct online sale for $139 each, the store honored the sale price. I just had to print out the page to prove, store won't look up the online sale. They are re-badged Odyssey's at a much lower price. Quality is not cut, they have the same specs & weight. I like 'em, we'll see how long they last....
If I had a pickup that would fit a bigger battery I would have gone with Costco batts. which get high ratings. Only the small Group 78 fits the diesel 6.5 van.
