ACK! Don't go deleting anything, manually - this rogue program installs itself in about 15 different locations and 'hides' as a normal program. Most times, when you start deleting things it SAYS to delete, you are deleting necessary files for your OS.

Louis, that program is wonderful for secure erasing registry files you DO want to get rid of, but for this instance, it won't help much because of the nature of the malware.

Thanks, though!! I lost the bookmark to that site, and now I have it back, thanks to you!

Be Careful.....It's like Baccardi 151,.....Stong $hit

I had a call about this a few weeks ago. I was lucky in the sense that I went into safe mode and restored to a earler time and installed MSE and got rid of it. i have also had to do a fresh install...many hours of hard work if the customer doesn't have any disks. It will make you chase it all over the place....it is wouldn't allow me to download or install and ?.exe files.

Yeah, Tim, that's a PITA, isn't it? You need to run the registry fix noted in post #13 in order to be able to run EXE files, and you need to bring MBAM.EXE in on a stick, as it won't let you download it.

Sorry Louis... didn't mean to come off like a know-it-all. I apologize for my tone.

The registry cleaner you posted works pretty good, and there are a few other neat hacks on that site, which is why I was excited when I saw it again... it's just that this PITA spyware hijacker that Nick picked up is damn-near impossible to get rid of by conventional methods... and it's hard to say how much of it went to Nick's PC before his Spybot picked up the delivery program and stopped it, so the best way is to proceed like the whole thing is there and is active.

This Computer forum started because one of the members picked up Antivirus2009, which is a weak sister to this problem. There's damn few ways to successfully get rid of that one, too.

Please post the procedure in the stickys to the both of them....I think I had that Antivirus 2009 or maybe even still have part of it.......AND THEY BETTER WORK!:smile5:

I cant even get it to boot up. I tried before I left for work but it hung up as windows was loading. Windows was loading slowly and never fully loaded at all. Just a black screen that said that it was working. I might be SOL and time for a new comuter anyways. The only thing I would like to salvage would bemy 7000 pictures but I'm assuming thats trashed too.

Crap.

Nick, don't give up. You may not be able to get to where you want to on your computer, but there are folks you can get it going and rescue your pictures. I had one of those a few months ago. I got it with the help of others. You can too. BTY in now have malwarebytes on my desk top and do a deep scan every few days.

Nope... this isn't a virus in the pure sense of the term, so your pictures should still be OK. What it does is mess up Windows. Your pictures should still be there.

When you try to boot, if you press F8 (right after it says 'starting windows'), can you get to a menu of options (safe mode, safe mode with networking, command prompt, etc)? If so, then you can get to your pictures and copy them onto a jump drive or another hard drive, without starting Windows.

7k pictures.....dang. You could also purchase a external enclosure and mount the drive in it or get a toaster, have another PC scan the drive and delete the crap (trojans). I have done that many times. But if the registry is corrupt it would be better to save all you could and reload Windows back on......Or if you have the cash buy a new computer with the i7 Processor...That thing is bad...

Tim, I got your message. Last night was hectic and I have no idea what's in store for me tonight till 0300 when I get home. If I get the chance, I'll call you back.

Are you any good at building computers?

Ok, I got it up and running but it wont let me download ANYTHING. Its blocking anything from being downloaded. I click on download and 2 seconds later, it says canceled.

Nick, I think what worked for me was to click ctrl, alt, del (at one time) then you'll task manager. Click to processes, then find the name of the adware giving you trouble move to it and click "end process".

Then you have a little time to download.

Each time I clicked end process I got more downloaded until I finally got the entire program. I then did a deep scan and it detected all the gremlins.

In the instructions I posted for you (post #13), I indicated that you have to download MalwareBytes (found HERE) and the registry hack to let you run the MBAM setup (found HERE) using another computer, then put those files onto a flash drive and then install them onto your PC.

The problem with this hijacker is that it won't let you download anything, or run any programs, or do anything that will allow you to remove it.

The instructions found at:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-antivirus-vista-2010

WILL let you remove the infection.

Trust me... I'm a Doctor. ):h

on edit: don't despair :mad2: - there are a LOT of alternatives we can use to get things back right again. Don't go deleting things, reformatting things, or repeatedly shooting the box with a Glock. Yet. ):h

I cannot download anything from another computer. Not an option. I see what I can come up with though. I have a friend coming over tomorrow to look at this system though.

D2, when I open task manager, there's a hundred programs listed but magically, XP Defender is not even listed there as a running program, unless of course its named something different.

Look for AV.exe or AVE.exe -- if you can kill those processes, you might be able to download your programs. I doubt it, but maybe.

Hey, can you get email on another computer? I could email you the files and you could save them onto a flash drive.

For that matter, I could put the files on a flash drive and snail-mail the damn thing to you.

Surely SOMEbody down there (somebody you work with or know) has a PC that would download these files for ya...

The other computer that I have is the work ToughBook and I'm not downloading anything on that. Not an option. If the files were emailed, I could access those. That would actually be ideal.

I'll go out and get a flash drive.

Ya just need a little one... the files aren't very big - only about 6 mb total. They're gonna be on the way as soon as you tell me (PM) where you want 'em sent to.

building them is easy....I can take that drive and put it in a external enclosure and wipe the bastages out of it.....if you are happy with what you have you can keep it and I will save the files for you.....easy for me to do. Nothing but a little time
