My mechanic says a 6.5 never steams out the exhaust

^ Well said.

we want you to fix it right. but if fixing it right is not financially feasable, try whatever band-aid jerry-rigged fix you want, and report back if it "fixed it"

And, more importantly, if it does not, and the engine ends up grenading, please understand the failure was operator induced, and not a fault of the engine. So if she blows on ya, know its your fault, and dont go bad mouthing the 6.5L because of it. :)

I blew up my 93, because I did everything wrong.
1) installed a new used pump and did not time it perfectly. just set it mark to mark and ran it. And the sad thing is, I allready owned a J-33300 Tach and Time :(

2) Running way over factory tow limits with no guages. Flying blind with no EGT guage on a stock turboed truck pulling many tons over factory recommended GCWR, and over western passes to boot. What could go wrong? :)

3) Running a stock turbo. all the above may not have mattered had I been running a ATT.

So upon review, I am fully to blame for the trucks failure, and it sure as heck hasnt affected how I like the old beasts. :) I am planning the replacement motor for it, not going to go too crazy, just better than OEM, and most important, frigging guages and a ATT. :)

My brother did 5 transmissions. All less than 50,000 mi. I added two coolers with sensible driving. Trans in over 200,000 mi. And regular service. Fluid stays red.

If the oil stays clean for a while after a change, that is a sign the engine is otherwise healthy with no blowby and the engine is worth fixing right... ;)

I can drive all day on days that are in the mid 90's and my truck will run 180-190 empty (completely stock cooling system) If I am hauling.......it will climb right through 210. There are lots of opinions about max temp for these things but I like to baby it so thats where I stop.

Can't remember what year and series (15,25 or 3500) you're running. But, from my own experiences, my 96 1500 with the OEM cooling system, single T-stat, and stock exhaust would run up to and through 210 on a moderate grade pulling its own weight in 90*+ weather. Even in cooler weather I'd watch the gauges carefully. Adding the 4" exhaust kit was a huge improvement and helped immensely. After I made the investment for the upgraded fan, clutch and water pump kit, it is a real effort to get it over 200*. That went for the old motor and this newer one. It took a long grade out of Vegas, in mid-summer, along with an aftermarket bumper without holes or ducting to do it though. Still, it got to just under 210* and as soon as I crested the hill, no more issues.

Gauge bounces a bit...down then up. Auto zone fan may be done 5 yrs. Lifetime...tried to r/r it but new one had stripped threads. Looked so good just put old one back on for the time being.

Ambient temps make a massive difference when humidity is lower. Its all about bieng able to get rid of the heat.

What autozone fan?

I don't see anything wrong with your temps, other than fluctuating, I have been in your area many many times when I drove otr, I saw the difference first hand between the east & left coast in the rig's temp gauge's, not just the water temp, axle, trans, fuel temps, the humidity has a lot to do with it, hell it feels different to people it has the same affect on motors...

I would suggest you order a AC Delco # 11259338 T-stat @ around 25$, most any other brand will & has caused issues with temps... that might just help control the temps better, and make sure the cooling system is bled of air...
