More good news
Got a phone call this eavening from a fellow a short ways away that has a Turbo 400 to NP 203 adapter for $50. (I had placed an ad on craigs list)

I just happen to have a complete TH400 in parts sitting in the basement left over from my old 86 dually. The tranny was "fresh" when I bought the truck and it quit a few months later.

Tranny shop had not paid anu attention to the inner lugs on the case having worn out. The center support could slop around and it cased the high clutches to burn up.

I bought a lovely heavy bellhousing 400 case and have yet to put the sucker back together.

The best part is that I have a small splined output shaft for the 400 that can go in it. The tranny had been rebuilt with a transgo shift kit so all I need is a gasket and seal set and some high clutches and Poof, I have a bomb proof tranny and buckle up the NP 203 and the drive train is ready for just about anything that little 6.2 can dish out.

The 400 requires only one vacuum hose to run and be happy.

I just happen to own a brand new vacuum control valve too.

This may well be a very good setup for the Burb.

Time will tell.

What's your take on the factory mech LP vs electric. My experiences with the mech ones hasn't been good. I'm gonna use the spare Raptor I have(thanks to Lee's). Way overkill, but I have it.
 
Here is my position on this stuff

A "Rig"
Is a vehicle that can be counted on when the $hit hits the fan, the chips are down, the weather is at it's worst and getting nastier by the minute.

The last thing I want to worry about is an electronic majic box running the show and then taking a poop and leaving me stranded.

Sure, anything can quite but electronics with the myriad wires and connections and other delicate components are a sure recipe for failure under the worst case scenario.

Its not at all hard to see why the Military has stuck with the DB2 on the HMMWV all these years and the TH 400 tranny.
Two very reliable pieces of equipment that will get you through when the chips are down.

Just for the life of me, can't imagine the boys out in the sand trying to get the Hell out of Dodge with a Hummer as the Taliban is coming over the ridge and having a PMD fail or the check engine light come on or worse yet the thing goes in to LIMP mode or dies all together.

The high tech goodies are cool when they are working but just not made well enough to suit me.

The stuff that they install on class 8 trucks is definately a cut above but still subject to issues.

I want all the best of the best of the mechanically opperated stuff on "MY RIG"

Once put in top condition these components have a good long life span that with minimal maintenance are absolutely trouble free.

The jury is still out on which trany to use in my build.

I have a complete 700R thats in the 91 behind the 350 gasser that was recently shopped.

I have a complete 700R in the 87 that I know little about other than it seemed to work fine in the 5 miles I drove it home back in December.

I have the TH350 thats with the NP203 that I know has some issues.
Possibly rebuild and use that.

I have the TH 400 siting in pieces on the bench that can be put together in short order.

The 700R trannies are nice in that they have the OD
The down side is that they are not the strongest box in the pile.

The 350 is a fine little piece but will need to come apart and be gone through.

The 400 is the Brute of the bunch and requires zero linkage/cables etc to function.

Just a simple vacuum line to run the modulator.

The 400 can take anything you can throw at it. (unless you get plain stupid)

The 400 shares many internals with the 4L80 too. (at least to some extent)

My daily driving and even trips anymore are relatively short so any advantage of the OD is likely a moot point.

My 86 Burb 2500 4x4 with the 6.2 was bone stock and had the Th400 with 4.10 gears.

Drove that rig to LA several times and never once took issue with not having an OD

Still got great mileage and it had stock sized tires.


My leanings are to go with the 400 and sell the 700R trannies or at least one of them.

Dont know if they are both "K" case or not but suspect so as they are late 700R 4x4 applications.

The 350 is a saleable item too.

This is the fun part of these projects ya know.

Having all these goodies to fool with and, which one do I use??????????//

My $0.02

Unload the 700R's asap. TH400's are bulletproof, IMHO. Many nightmares with 700R's; trying to forget.

TH400's are EMP proof, too, in case of nukes.

I vote for an elec LP backup (carter), not overkill, but insurance.

HMMMMMM, well probably use the stock pump that came on the 6.2.

I am salvaging all the fuel lines, tank and other goodies off the 87 and transplanting onto the 91

I may use a Carter electric pump as a "Primer " The factory engine driven pumps are bomb proof and dont need any
wires to make them go.

The 700R is not a bad tranny if you dont mind spending some serious $$$$ on the inside of the little beast to upgrade.

For reliability you need the following
Sun shell, input drum, sprags and roller lock, front pump, shift kit , additional clutches, HP 2-4 band, 2-4 servo upgrade.

HD Planet carriers and ????

Probably other stuff but thats the bulk of whats needed to make the 700 live.

A 400 out of the box with nothing more than a shift kit is pretty robust.

Far more than a 1500 4x4 toy will ever need.

Sort of overkill but very reliable.

Found the mech LPs to be pretty unreliable and have overnight starting issues as they get old in my experience. Gonna go electric on that but I'm not in love with a stande alone either . If I did a 4l80 I'd put a manual reverse VB and live with shifting it.
 
The factory "TYPE" mechanical lift pumps are fine. The only issues are when the check valve gets tired.

An inline check valve near the tank is a good thing. This will prevent the back bleeding overnight or if it sits for a while.

Adding a flow through electric pump is a good way to go. Just prime the system and your set.

Once the check valve in the Mech, pump goes south they can bleed back and result in starting issues.

Just a little inline check near the tank takes care of it for good.

Some good news this Morning

In my quest to be able to work on the 91 I needed to come up with some funds $$$$ that are not spoken for, for bills and living expenses.
I can't fund this project from my monthly income at present.

So I lamented over some personal guns that I rarely shoot any more.

Hauled my 44 Desert Eagle out of the safe and listed it on Auction Arms.

This morning it has a bid on it, so therein lies the funds for my Lift Kit for the 91.

Yessssssssss

Sort of bitter sweet though, had some very good memories with the D E but life goes on.

Can't live 20 years in the past.

Soon as I get this auction closed (29th) and paid I will snuggle up to the puter hwere and order a complete 6 inch lift kit for the little Red/black beast.

Also thinking about naming the rig.

Rarely have we ever bestowed names on our vehicles.

The Black 86 Dually 3+3 4x4 got called "Mariah" Black Mariah

The name "Miss/Fit was mentioned yesterday for the 91
I sort of like it.

Maybe get a decal done at the local sign shop with a pinup girl sitting on the hood of a Burb and the "Miss Fit" under it. Sort of like the nose art that was common on the B17's of WWII

Just not sure yet.

Gotta do something to make a statement I guess.

Thinking about trying hard to get the Burb ship shape and looking good for the local July Car show here in town.

I want to get the paint on the hood fixed and the rig lifted and some decent tires and wheels on it by then.

Put up the Obligatory story board of the project with pix and objectives (such as engine/tranny swap)

The end of an era
I can do a writeup of the facts of the "square bodied" trucks from 73 to 91 at least Burbs, Blazers and Crewcabs.

18 years with only minor running changes to the sheetmetal and such

The 91 was the pinacle of that design.

Gonna have to buff the paint a bit and damned sure get the buffer on the running boards.

The diamond tread boards are a great utilitarian boad set, but they oxidize quickly.

This Old girl want a fling I guess, just some time to play and have fun once again.

Been far too many years since I have been able to get out on the town and enjoy myself so to speak.

The little local car show is a yearly event at the end of a local festival.

Attracts rigs from all over the area.

Some new stuff like the local hot rod Mustangs and Vettes to the unusual stuff like Studebaker Avanties.

A Few early T Birds and older Vettes too. Some Model T's and A's usually show up.

The 55-57 Chevy is usually well represented too with a couple of very cool Nomads usually making an apearance.

The Odd ball cross breed stuff is always present and draws the currious lookers.

Usually one of the local drag racers will have a rail or a funny car on display.

The Obligatory "ENGINE BLOW" is a favorite.

This past year there was an early Chevy Suburban. Not sure of the exact year but ln the 50's I think.

Ah well, all good fun.

Got my lift in today. Truck looks bad a$$. I'm so pissed though. I don't have lugnuts and nobody carries 9/16 Shank style anymore around here. I have to mail order them from Summit. I set it on to give it a look see though....

Just lovin my 91 Burb

Gonna Order the complete Rough country lift kit in 6 inch probably in a week or so.

Going to get it with the following upgrades
Nitrogen shocks (quad on front)
Dual steering stabilizers
Extended front and rear brake lines
Red shock boots (Thought about the pretty pink ones though) :eek:
Transfer case drop kit.
Sway bar drop kit
Drag link with the gink in it. (adjustable)

The Rough country was the most complete for the $$$$
Called and talked to them yesterday a bit and picked their brains a tad. :smile5:

Thw 6 inch kit will do exactly what I want and wont break the bank $$$$$$

Now I need to scrounge up a set of 15X10 alloy wheels that are nice and some 35 inch badass rubber

Probably go with the 35/12.50X15 of some sort or another.

Dont want no damned swampers though. Far too noisy for the street.

I spend 90% of my time on the road. The usual times that I need 4x4 are the winter snows and such.
Just a good all weather tire will do fine.

The Toyo Open country is not too rough a tread but about as far as I want to go.

I try to keep stuff that will wear fairly well on the street, but work well in snow and maybe a little mud.

The truck has got to be civilized.

Had a set of swampers on the last 91 I had. Them suckers would roar so bad going down the highway that it would drive ya nuts.

Not to mention that they were rough too. Slow speed was nasty too.

Those kind of tires belong in the bush.

I do love my DaHooooley though.
Have yet to drive the DaHooooley since the rebuild. Have run it a few times and warmed it up good but not had it out on the road yet.

Still need to get the plates and Ins. back on it. :sad:

Dont use the DaHoooley hardly at all now that the kids have their truck and I gave the daughter the big Horsie hauler.

Just did not want the truck to be down any more. Went out last weekend and fired it up for a while.

Going to stockpile the goodies for the 91 and then get going on it.

Going to run out tomorrow and fetch home the 203 T case that I bought.

Fellow has no lift or ??? so it't gonna be a drag it up a plank onto the car hauler trailer and tie it down sort of thing.

check out mastercraft courser ct tires the are milidly agressive low cost and preform well in mud and snow they are compareable to cooper stt tires i got a set i love them they last between 45 and 50 k depending on how many burnouts ya do
 
I have a bodylift for the CUCV but I'm gonna see how the tires clear. That lift looks more like a 6 than a 4. If the ires clear without issue I may shelf the bodylift for now.
