Killing a 6.5 Truck For Parts

it is amazing to think that a little piece of bent metal on the starter could be the diff between a good engine and a boat anchor.

Leroy I think I just need to tow my horse trailer/living quarters to Barry's and start putting parts on my truck! I believe he has every part needed to turn my truck into a awesome machine including a bunch of low mileage military 6.2s!!!!!! The man is junkyard wealthy!!!!

that is the nv4500 that isnt such a PITA to pull or put in like mine beacouse the shifter housing can unbolt from the top cover. you could have done that and pulled the whole motor tranny and case in one shot like you do with the autos.

Not with either of the NV4500s that I have.Perhaps newer models. The whole top cover of the tranny has to be removed to get the shifter tower off.

OPS different styles

Bill, I took a couple pics of the different styles of ops on the 91?-93 engines. I haven't found one of the all steel outside ones yet.The all steel is shaped similar to the second plastic one.

Back to where I left off

The clutch, pressure plate and disc looked pretty goodIMG_2422_27.JPGIMG_2423_28.JPGIMG_2424_29.JPGIMG_2425_30.JPG
Then put the engine on the stand. This engine has metric bellhousing bolts. The older 6.2s and 6.5s were standaed 3/8" these are M10 x 1.5.
Ancious to see the Navistar emblem cast in the valley, I removed the intake manifold:shiiiiiite::shiiiiiite::mad2: After looking at the date code on the bellhousing flange I figured it probbly was a GM engine. It is a 99 so it has to be GM. GEP didn't take over untill 2001. The PO may have not been accurate on the year he had it put in or it was a old leftover. It's still a low mile engine that runs very well. Just not a optimiser as thought. There is no " GM" cast in the block anywhere.Another clue was it doesn't have the center mount turbo oil drain provision in the valley and extra mounting bosses on the sides of the block. A couple pics of it with the intake off and my home made plugs over the ports.Don't want anything in there that doesn't belong:agreed:

I spent time today cleaning the engine, trans and front differential.

its a vally drain, all 6.2/6.5's have the drain hole but only the maunall tranny ones have the tub to keep oil or fuel or whatever from getting on the clutch.

Thanks BK for the OPS pics, here is one of my OPS, I cant get to it, the angle is such that a long extension with socket would hit the FFM. I am afraid to unplug it without a replacement because the terminal or plug might mess up. Its made of a gray cast monkey metal. I hope this works I been trying since last nite to post on TTS. Have yall blackballed me???? LOL I think GM gathered all the oddball parts and leftovers up and had Johhny Cash build my truck with them!

A little more progress

I got the steering, front brakes, hubs ,steering knuckles, steering box, cv axle shafts and front differential all removed. Cv axles are both shot. They will be going for scrap.
About all that's left is the rear axle. I'm not saving the springs. I have at least 4 sets now.

Finishing this one off

About all that was left to remove was the rear axle. I still don't understand a semi-floating axle in a 8600 gw truck:???: I didn't bother trying to save the u-bolts that hold the axle to the springs. On the semi-floating axles they rust off. These were down to about 1/4":eek:
My computer has the slows tonight and won't upload pics:mad2::mad2:
I see it might not have been all my computer's fault. Try again

I drug what was left outside and hauled it to the scrap pile. Now the hard part putting all the parts away in a organized way:???::skep:

Would you check resistance of fuel heater rod? Mine is not working and I am thinking I could find one same size and resistance and mold the plastic part on it and not have to buy a $125.00+ one.
Thanks grigsby

Someone mentioned not long ago you could buy a new FFM complete with heater for less than that.

I am looking for somebody that has a fuel heater loose that would measure resistance and communicate ohms to me. My engine is still starting without it. but? I appreciate it. grigsby
