It all began with the failure of the AUX fuel tank!

Okay. Now a little patience with a novice, here: When I turn on my key the instr panel lights-up, the glow plug light comes on and says WAIT, and I hear a ticking sound. What is the ticking sound?
This morning I went thru that sequence and it started right up. It then began chugging and stalling and racing alternately, then shut off.
I then tried something new: Instead of hitting the starter when the glow-plug light went out, I waited until that clicking sound stopped, then hit the starter, and it started and ran smoothly. I was afraid to take the chance and drive it to my early morning part-time job and so I shut it off and took the car.
Is that the fuel shut-off switch that's in front of the IP that I'm describing?
Should I go ahead and replace it?

Also, I have been having a lot of difficulty posting to this website. I was running IE6 and I think it might have been the problem.
I'm running FireFox now and it seems to work much better.

sounds to me like you need to do the 2k rpm test on the IP. Other things I would rule out first are, verify LP is working as it should, and PMD. ticking sounds could be the LP running (should only run for a few seconds in the WTS mode) , glow plugs cycling, doors on the heating/ac system

The clicking is the sound one hears when you first turn the ignition switch to ON. I've heard it on all my diesel trucks in the past. In my case, I bought new tow trucks and I never did any of the work on them. I would only keep them for two or three years then trade-in. Although, I've worked on all my own cars all my life, I never worked on a diesel.
I need to familiarize myself with the components of the fuel system. I don't know how to "bleed" the system or troubleshoot it in any way.

Well, I got a good deal on a sender (a friend works at a Chevy dealership) of only $237! I installed it yesterday. I hooked everything back-up, i.e. hoses and electrical. I then went and filled the aux tank. I had already cleaned it thoroughly. The truck started right up (but it HAS been doing so for a while) The question is...will is shut off on me when I drive it?

This friend of the family works as a mechanic on Chevys and he brought with him one of those expensive OBD rigs. He could find absolutely nothing amiss using the reader. I'm all back together, now, to where I was BEFORE the start-of-the-trouble. One peculiarity, though, is when you start the truck, the fuel gauge reads a little-less-than HALF. After about 30 seconds, the needle snaps to E and stays there.

I don't know if the AUX tank is going to feed the MAIN tank because, at this point, both tanks are FULL. Is there some steps I should take to re-introduce the AUX tank to the brain (or something) ?

WOW! ak diesel driver, that is the EXACT same scenario as my own truck. The only difference is that my gauge used-to work fine until this mishap.

GM Guy: I will disconnect the batteries to see what happens since it's the easiest to do. Doing the easiest stuff FIRST to see if it solves a problem...there must be a name for that technique of troubleshooting, eh? Thanx

I unhooked the batteries overnight and re-connected them the next day...you're suspicion was correct...it didn't change anything.

I've been busy with work, so I haven't done anything more to it. Someone suggested replacing the fuel balance sender so I'll do that next. I'm told it's not a too expensive part.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
