Ok, I'm still working on my '95 Burb. When I brought it home I seized the NV4500. It was dry from oil and I didn't know, so it seized up doing 55MPH. I brought it to a friend and he tore it down and replaced everything that was needed and put it back together. I installed it and once everything was buttoned up and there was OIL in it, I tested it out. 1-2-3-4 fine, shift into 5th and then go to downshift and the shifter comes to the neutral position, but the trans stays in 5th! Take the tower off, shift into neutral with a screwdriver. Put the tower on and bring it home in 4th. Once home, I can't get it into 5th or reverse. Put the t-case in neutral and fool around and it starts to work again. 5th and reverse work fine. Take it for another drive...ARGGGGHHHH screws up again. :mad2: So, either it won't go into 5th/reverse, or, when it does, ithe trans will stay in 5th and the shifter will come out and go into neutral.

Any ideas?

I'm getting really frustrated...

Thanks,:grouphug:

Maybe not pull it just yet....I hope this is the newer style NV4500......If it is it will have four bolts hold the shift tower on.....Take those out and verify that the R-5 shifter fork is in the grove for the slider. It is on the drivers side. These are very easy to miss lining up when you put the top on. The bummer is you have to pull the whole top plate to line it up again though.
The other thing to check is make sure all the plastic wear slides are in there. the 5-R fork could be hoping ou tof the grove if somethings missin. Good Luck

I taqke the tower off all the time to get it out of gear LOL. Ok, I know which one is for 5th/Reverse, but how do I know if it's in the grove? And can I see these wear slides?

So, I figured some stuff out too... It WILL come out of 5th, but not if I put my foot on the clutch. Foot down, shifter won't move, let off and gently pull, it comes right out. This has only been tried with the t-case in neutral.

With t-case in neutral, try to shift into reverse. Clutch in, pull into R, shifter won't pull into reverse. Clutch in, pull harder on shifter, let clutch out while maintaining pressure on shifter - grinding of gears. Clutch in, pull pn shifter like you want to rip the tranny out from under the truck, let clutch out - shifts partway into reverse and then as clutch is let all the way out trans "pulls" itself all the way into reverse. Once in reverse you need to give the shifter a good shove to get it out, usually this ends up putting the trans into 5th! ARRRGGGG!!!!! LOL

This is where I'm at.

Thanks for the sugestions and hopefully you can tell me what i'm supposed to be looking for. :)

4th gear is in the rear of the tranny,5th gear is located between t-case and tranny in the aluminum adaptor.
There may be something with the sincro collar that's not put together right to prevent smooth engagement

We found the problem!!!!

When I seized the trans I melted the 5th gear shift fork. I bought a new one but it appears that the new fork was machined incorrectly!

I will be ordering the new fork tomorrow.

I'll let everyone know how I fair. thanks for all the help!

Bill

So, not only was the new fork machined incorrectly, the rod that actuates it was slightly bent. these 2 things were cocking the fork and not allowing it to move the collar squarely. Also, the split pins were not the correct size. I installed 2 proper split pins and then drilled and tapped the fork and rod to take a set screw just to make sure nothing was gonna move. Now i just need to re-install it again and see if it works.

Wish me luck!

God this thing is heavy! I got the trans into the bellhousing and into the throwout bearing, but now i have run out of energy. it's cold and I'm laying in the snow doing this. If it has to come out again I'm gonna cry. :( LOL I'm gonna rest up and hopefully tomorrow I'll be a bit stronger and be able to manipulate this thing back into place. Unfortunatly for me, I wasn't able to get the truck onto ramps before removing the trans this time so it's a little harder to work on being so close to the ground. :(

Thanks for the good wishes!

Bill

I got the trans in and all buttoned up. I put about 300km on it today and found that 4th has bad syncros, but that isn't a big deal. Found I have a fish bite issue on hard acceleration and sometimes at cruise... Pretty sure my lift pump isn't working. :( Also, my coolant temp still isn't working. :( My RPMs are off too as I'm reving 2100@55mph in od and 3:42 gears...

Work continues...

:)
