Is my 6.5 dead?

Here are some pictures.

Seen that before - bet you got a bolt loose off the Torque Converter plowing into the cover. Broken flexplate wouldn't surprise me.

I just took of the dust cover and I do see some minor wear on the flywheel but nothing major (I think). from the bolts I can see connecting the TC to the FW they all look good. I can see where the new starter gear has some possible where in it I think, not sure though. I know they are supposed to come with shims but mine didn't. Not sure how to install them either. Here are some pictures of part of the starter gear. I took a video but the lighting wasn't too good.

Can I or should I crank it to inspect?

I`m surprised that You can still use PB to host pics. from. Now, only paid accounts ve that ability.
I dont go to PB as it bogs down this computer so bad it freezes it up, then a hard shut down is in order to get out of it. Even control/alt and delete buttons do no good.
I now use flikr to host photos. No running adds in there.
Previously if the starter was making some screeching sort of noise, it was too tight into the starter ring and did need the shims. That is a possibility why there would be steel dust inside the cover.
Shims are installed by loosening the inner bolt, next to fly wheel then removing the outer bolt, then the shims are slid in between the block and starter and the bolt installed and other bolt secured, then it is a try it out, if it still sounds abnormal then more shims is needed.
I just installed a new starter in the wifeys 88 Buick, no shims was needed with the old starter. the new starter took four shims to make it sound right.

Thanks for the advise on PB. I was wondering why it's so slow. I will give the shims a try.

@MrMarty51 Shims are for "other" engines. The 6.2 and 6.5 starters have "No Shim" cast on the housing so don't use them on this engine. As the OP noted the support bracket was loose likely the cause. That bracket and the special starter bolts align the starter. I would suggest replacing the starter bolts as they may be damaged - after all the 10 HP starter is known to bust the mount ear clean off the block. If you think you need a shim something else is wrong perhaps a junk reman starter or other mentioned items.

The starter bolts look good But I will replace them. Can't see where the knock could be coming from unless the TC is bad also. I'll see how it looks as it is being cranked. If that looks good and the starter gear and the FW line up is the next step unbolting the TC and moving it away from the FW and Crank it?
