Is my 6.5 dead?

I just got underneath and cranked it again and it didn't smoke this time. I did notice a little oil on the starter which could be coming from the turbo but don't see any oil around it. I'm also thinking the flywheel could be the culprit now.

Smoke could be from exhaust. One of my engines will smoke without fuel cranking just from valve guides leaking down. Inspect exhaust for hitting something or internally collapsed crossover pipe.

UM... Disconnect the batteries and carefully inspect the main power wire that runs by the starter. You may have to remove the starter. The insulation can fall off and short the wire. Also starter connections or the (failing) starter itself can smoke. Oil on the starter bolts is frankly normal from various engine leaks.

I was also thinking starter causing the smoke but what about the noise? I was thinking it could be the flywheel and not the TC.

You are pulling the crossover and rock guard to inspect the flexplate anyway... (50 LB Flywheels are for MT trucks... ;) )

Maybe start by pulling and inspecting the starter? Who knows if it's collateral damage from something else.

She sure is turning over slow. High load or bad starter/battery? Again you can loose half the starter and it will still turn over. (One field winding or 1 of 4 brushes. Not likely but up to 2 total brushes if they are opposing brushes.)

For reference this is what "speed" they should sound like cranking :

I would look really good at the main wire going to the starter like war wagon said. Maybe be a good time to replace it.

Have you checked the harmonic balancer or the dampener pully in front of it yet.

You have probably the most experienced 6.5ers out there (not me) helping you out on here so they will get you fixed up.

Spun rod bearing or 2 me thinks. Cranks slow because of the galled up journal or journals.

Drain the oil into a clean black pan. Check for metal shavings.

Cut the oil filter open is a good way to check for shavings as well. Probably should park it in a place that's easy to pull an engine before starting on the inspections... :dead:

Is there a hissing sound in the video when cranking like an air leak out of a cylinder? I think I hear this.

You also might want to check to make sure that the glow plugs are all properly seated and tight, at least on that side of the engine.
It does appear that the smoke is coming from the starter.

I just pulled the starter and there were metal shavings all around the inside and outside of the starter. It appears that the front bracket bolt that holds the starter bracket to the block came lose and fell out so there was nothing supporting the starter. I think it put pressure on the flywheel. The starter tested bad at AZ. All the wires look good. I disco'd the fuel solenoid and cranked it and the first crank it made the same noise that was on the video. I cranked a few more times and it wasn't there. I plugged in the solenoid and started it up and the knock was there. I'm not ruling out the engine but I'm thinking it is the flywheel or TC. We'll see after further inspection.

First thought was seized vacuum pump and bad starter. Take serp belt off for grins and see if noise go's away.

Hey Rodd, I see your in Antelope. I have family there. I was just there in June.

I'd also say starter don't seem well, or possible combo starter/fly wheel

And dont worry about the oil on the starter, hehe , mines always covered oil, I bet starter burning up as ya crank

I removed the vac pump in June. Before I replaced the starter I removed the belt and the noise was still there. The A/C pulley and the alternator pulley turn freely no problem. Should I remove it again since I replaced the starter?
