Intake Mod, other project or two and finally, the ATT.

Yes yes yes the found memories of looking for that piece I put away safely in sight so that i wouldn't loose it. Loose it then find it a few days later looking right at me, from that safe place right out in plain view. Time for a beer and a rest it is.

Bought the locking ring and gasket, modified the fuel sender which went pretty much as described in Leroy's directions, cleaned things up for some compulsive reason (I need professional help, I mean, who cares if the hoses are all clean and shiney under there?) and replaced the fuel sock. Debated about that one as I have the wix pre-filter and all but I've had it laying around for a long while and it's one more layer of protection. Afterwork tonight I put the tank back up in there and that's one job I don't plan on redoing any time soon. As I drove the 7 miles to get a full tank of fuel I couldn't help but stare at the fuel gauge. I only put 2 gallons back in it and I've never seen the gauge that low. My self confidence meter was equally low as I kept thinking, "I hope I did this right cause I don't want to 'try try again' on this project." Filled it up, 25.7 gallons and the gauge reads full. It moves a little with the sloshing of the fuel in there but nothing like it did before the swap. Good news on mileage too as I totaled up the partial fills over the last week along with tonight's and the ATT picked up 1.8 MPG over the average winterblend runs on the GM5. With fuel prices the way they are headed, this thing will pay for itself in short order.
Now where the heck is that locking ring and gasket at?

Projects Projects.
Taking a week off from work to get some space on the shelves.

Today I installed the Walbro pump and Wix filter I’ve had sitting on the shelf forever. I wanted to mount it all up so it wouldn’t hang below the frame. I made up a mounting bracket similar to Leroy’s (PMDCable.com) who sold me the pump and filter. I had to do it twice (of course) and it took most of the day.

I did mine opposite of his set up but fuel flows in the same order of Filter, LP, FFM….

Anyway, I filled the filter and the pump prior to sliding it up into place as I wasn’t if it needed priming or not. Started right up and kept running so that project is done.

Still new at 6.5TD's... Am I correct in assuming there is no filter between the tank and the LP?

There is no filter between the tank the LP in stock configuration. Some of us add a filter inbetween there. There is however a screen in the fuel tank on the fuel sending unit, that is commonly reffered to as the tank sock. Some people remove the tank sock because it commonly gets clogged, and put a filter outside of the tank before the LP.

I didn't take any photos of the socks I took out or put in. Leroy (Burning Oil) has a couple on his first post advertising the Metrum Rod
Here's that link. http://www.thetruckstop.us/forum/showthread.php?27370-Brand-new-release-of-our-METRUM-ROD-FSU-!!!!!!!!!!!!
The sock is at the 12" mark on the messuring tape. Mine, w/ 185K miles, was only a darker grey which is great considering it has been in there for 11 years. Fortunately we seem to have pretty good fuel here as my VW hasn't plugged up an EGR valve in 5 years unlike the two we went through in Fayetteville NC. I digress.
The new sock was a pretty white color...NFL (not for long) I'm sure.

The arguement for or against the sock is an entertaining read but I chose to put another back on as just one more layer of defense. By the time the next 185K roles around the Sock should be the least of my worries.
Question for the group though. How often should that Wix Pre Filter get swapped out; same as the FFM or longer intervals?

Oh yeah, of no surprise to anyone, I found the locking ring and O ring :point:
:rof:
....anyone want them. Free shipping...

Maybe I'll send it to Leroy as a thank you gift.:D

Order your MFSR soon and you may get them as a bonus...

Don't feel bad Paul I had to go out & buy a wheel bearing seal twice once on my old Subaru Brat CV shaft housing, because I "lost" the 1st one, about a year later wife brings it to me, "Why is this in our extra freezer out back". Doh I had put it in there to shrink it so I could put it in the hub bore easier and forgot it.

Don't know how I missed this thread, just read it all and its 3:00am in the morning here in Singapore now. Anyway Wow! what a nice piece you came up with there. I run the same upper on mine also, but DB2 IP so never had a need for sensors.
Thanks for the write up.

Paul,
I wish to thank you for the spacer and your gained knowledge.
With a year of storage of the rest of things we brought last year at last I've finally finished putting it together this evening, as its raining heavily I thought it would very wise and sensible to just take it for a little cruise locally.

You are very welcome. You were an active participant with Ted as we tried to reason how to use the Peninsular Upper without having to drill out either the lower or upper intakes and still make it work with the electronics.
Good thing you got your truck finished, that was a $%^& load of parts you've accumulated over the last couple of trips here. Good luck with the rains and threats of flooding.

Just when you thought this was dead....

Sorry to bump this but I received a couple of questions the other day for pictures that would better indicate how things would/could mount up with the Peninsular intake w/o the spacer.

When 635’s motor was built, the spacer idea was still a couple of years off. Jamie Avant instead opted to drill and tap the lower intake to accept OEM Boost and IAT sensors. Along the way, the sensors for IAT & Boost were added along with a two stage WMI, Propane and Nitrous Oxide. In the end, the lower intake had four 1/8” NPT and one 3/8” NPT holes tapped. The Cummins elbow already came with one 1/8” NPT port but a second was added that is 8mm x 1.0pitch. The Peninsular hat received a 1/8” NPT tap as well. The pictures below have the holes filled with something to highlight were the drilling took place. The front side held the IAT and ECM's Boost sensor. The Boost sensor was held in place by a small bracket attached at the intake, like an SSD PMD "Cooler" only functional.
Front side with two taps. The boost line is a 1/8" NPT to 1/4" barb.

Here's a progression on the set up I'll be using which is with the lower intake's taps plugged up and using the my spacer for the sensors. I'm using these parts bacause unlike mine currently on the truck, these have all been extrude honed internally to include the OEM upper intake (not pictured). So, I've got choices.
Here's the parts with my old upper set up assembled and 635's parts.

Hope this helps as I'm pretty smoked so I hope this all makes sense.

The way it was....

I found a few shots I took of 635's motor before the King bearing went south. They show the Water, Propane and Nitrous lines running to the lower and upper intakes.
I just figured they were worth posting.
