identifying gm turbo

I thought I read the ATT went up to 18 with a Heath GL4 Performance reflash.

With a good turbo I would be tempted to go to 20psi but not over. Personal Preference.

It can hit 18, but I have yet to see the need to go there, I installed the dedicated Heath ATT tuned PCM last weekend, have not had an opportunity to put it through it's full paces yet.

With the GL4 non ATT reflash, I easily can get 100 mph with just 10 psi boost, something with the GM-8 that required 12+ psi to achieve, last big pull I did with ATT I was pulling a 16' vee nosed tandem axle cargo trailer loaded to about 7000# cruising 5-6 psi boost, & 12 psi on long grade, due to age/miles of/on my engine I self limit to 14 psi just to add a safety margin even though there is more boost to be had.

I'm too far away from home to do a full out testing, I don't want to brek the truck 1400 miles from home, so I won't be doing any 100+ mph testing here in NY, I'll have to wait until Aug to do full speed testing.

This much I'll say about the ATT matched Heath tune, it has much better bottom end response than the GM-X tuned GL4 has, not that it was a noteworthy issue running that tune with the ATT.

My new job comes with a company car and I'll be able to park the truck for some long overdue maintenance, so once I finish my steam turbine field engineers course this Aug. I can install the splayed main "project engine" that has been sitting for 2 years come this July. I'll be looking to match or better Ian's benchmark with that one, it probably will get some "drug therapy" before I get finished with it.

I just rolled 200K with this one last week, a little long in tooth to start pushing full envelope just yet.

hmm, well im unsure if i mentioned it but im really a cummins guy myself. but i want to learn more about the 6.5 since i hate dodge trucks. i think it would be cool to change to a totally different injection pump, bigger lift pump, really high flow injectors, lower compression, and a way better turbo. but i dont know enough about this engine to deal with any of that yet. or if thats even something you would want to do to this engine.

There is plenty of reading for you to do then. I wouldn't expect to race a cummins w/ aftermarket work done and win. But you could expect to have a truck with respectable power and have the pride that you did it in a 6.5 and not many people can say that.

Most of what you want to do is possible.

i dont think my truck will go over 80 with its gearing before it redlines. i know it will hit seventy super quick though, atleast for what it is anyways. and all this 18 PSI bussines is not a fact guys, its just what my gauge reads. but it sounds and feels like 18 to me! it sounds nothing like my old cummins which by gauge ran 32 psi.

i did not know that about SSD. i do know that their cold air intake IMO is not a very good idea or design. and everything i hear about their marine injectors is that they are terrible. and the pmd location kit they sell. so all in all from everything i have heard most of the things they have arent that great? but it did make a huge difference compared to how this truck was stock so i have not a clue what to think. i did own this truck when it was stock and it was a dog, sold it, friend put all the goodies on it, and i just bought it back.

I'm not sure what the knock your having sounds like for sure but Ijectors can knock if they are bad. SSD's have a reputation for going bad and being cheap built.

Just about any tune on these trucks makes a night and day difference in power.

i go at everything with the attitude that anything is possible :) and i dont expect a whole lot of performance out of this truck. its is already the sickest 6.5 in my hometown. i would like to be able to haul my 97 silverado behind it with ease and take it cross country without a fear in all honesty. my 97 is the "race truck" lol ( its actually pretty impressive ) so i dont need my diesel to be anything too exciting just nice and fun to drive!

well these injectors were supposed to be new i belive, and from ssd. they only have 595 miles on them which is why im puzzled.

Then have fun get it done! The 6.5 will do what you need in that case then.

ok I see the topic went out the window so I'll try to get it back LOL. the engine is a 95 S code. unknown milage. it's has a GM4 turbo. shaft has a hair of play in it. I couldn't tell how free it spins though. the suckers got a couple of ounces of oil in it do to the CDR. how much play can the shaft have without issues?

imo yes. turbo doesn't actually run on the bearings but a film of oil on them there has to be enough clearance for the oil film

Lol, sorry about that. We were just keeping it bumped to the top for ya!

is there any interest in having a banks sidewinder anymore? i have one off of my 6.2 that has been wrapped up and in storage for quite some time.
