identifying gm turbo

12-15 is suggested when using GMx turbo's. IAT gets too high over that and cause back pressure problems too. Using a different turbo set up you can easily use 20 maybe even close to 30 if you watch your gauges. Heath shoves 30 through his land speed truck with dual turbos.

well the gm turbo on this thing out of the box is running 18 if its mashed to the floor. it also has the ECM and chip so that is probly why? so you think 30psi would be a safe number on my truck? i dont " drag race " it or anything. most of the time it doesnt go over 10 psi now.

No! 30 is if you have say a holset or something custom like that. At 18 on a GM turbo I might would use an intercooler. 15 is the max suggested with a GMx turbo wether you get it from SS Diesel, Heath, or anyone else.

what i am asking is just what the motor would handle, id like to switch to a better turbo lol. i dont have an intercooler yet but the way this truck is it doesnt look very hard to build a set up for it :)

30psi has been done but not in a DD setup that Ive heard of. I personally I wouldn't go over 20psi on a stock engine.

yeah i can imagine. i was shocked to see this one at 18 psi. i thought i read 9 psi being too much for a stock 6.5. the only upgrade from stock on this thing is the arp head bolts which i thought would make more boost ok to have. if it were mine at the time of building the motor i would have liked to lower the compression personally but its too late now.

15 is ok with a tune and all of the right gauges. ARP Studs will help insure the Head Gaskets last longer under increased boost. Ditch the vaccum set up and instal a TM set at 15. That will keep you from having to get a reflash to lower the boost and a TM is more reliable.

i would assume the upgraded ECM and chip would be considered a tune. and it already has gauges. i have not heard of ditching the vaccume set up yet.

I honestly keep it at or under 9.

I will code if above 10 or so, so I limit my throttle by boost. New reflash may change this.

I really want the ATT though. I know it's a perfect match for my truck. No wastegate, and they say you really have to push it to see 10+. But the engine power it frees up, and the cooler IAT's is what its all about.

I don't like high PSI... I feel like something is going to break lol.

With a turbo master (TM/mechanical wastegate) you no longer need the Vaccum pump to run the wastegate actuator. The TM is set by adjusting the nut jammed against the spring.

Also, some tunes are made for the V-pump and can control the turbo really when when still controleld by the actuator. Its more efficient, and as Buddy said, it anticipates boost rather than reacts to it.

If your truck still has all that stuff I bet the tune was made for that. I think Kennedy likes the V pump... what tune is it?

well aside from the problems i have mentioned she is running great at 18. i have only hit 18 once though and usually it doesnt go over 10 psi because i drive it like an old man lol. i will probly give it a little more throttle after i figure out this knocking business. but otherwise its code free!

its some upgraded ssdiesel ecm and their " 80 HP" chip. im not really fond of anything that comes from SSD, but my friend was. so you can put my truck down all you want...ill probly agree with everything someone says negative about SSD lol.

Ditching v pump is nice because it eliminates another accesory off the crank... Something else to fail too....

I noticed a MPG loss when going TM.

BUT I also noticed my EGT's were cooler by a few hundred on big climbs... So I like that better... plus one less thing to fail.

Speaking of this, I think I'm going to back off my TM a little so it doesn't boost so much.. I never really played around with it, just set it and forget.

Its subbed out by Westers? Not done in house IIRC... probably a decent tune.

With the reflash I bet it changes the overboost code. The only reason I suggested TM and not another reflash to change the boost is cost.

I think the VP is more accurate with a proper tune.

hmm, well im unsure if i mentioned it but im really a cummins guy myself. but i want to learn more about the 6.5 since i hate dodge trucks. i think it would be cool to change to a totally different injection pump, bigger lift pump, really high flow injectors, lower compression, and a way better turbo. but i dont know enough about this engine to deal with any of that yet. or if thats even something you would want to do to this engine.

i did not know that about SSD. i do know that their cold air intake IMO is not a very good idea or design. and everything i hear about their marine injectors is that they are terrible. and the pmd location kit they sell. so all in all from everything i have heard most of the things they have arent that great? but it did make a huge difference compared to how this truck was stock so i have not a clue what to think. i did own this truck when it was stock and it was a dog, sold it, friend put all the goodies on it, and i just bought it back.
