Sorry didn't get pics but i checked out the 1/2 ton.

The owner had begun to part it out so it wasn;t start able but I stuck a break over on the crank and turned it over, went easy enough. It doesn't have a red block anymore so I am guessing the truck has some miles and blew a gasket at some point. The interior isn't terrible and was obvioulsy cared for at one point. The bed is rusted out where an old repair was made. Doors and rockers have some rust. The body straight as an arrow and the front clip is good. He said it had some power when he used but never towed (bumper shows it), the inner bed was used but itn't bent up, the tailgate is perfectly straight.

I didn't get to check out the 3/4 ton i should have time friday, it is a good 2hr drive to get there but is close to home. It is from the original owner/ stayed in the family. Original engine w/ ~300K and blown HG if not worse. I will take pics of that one since I am wanting to transplant into it.

Ok, so I didnt get pics of the 3/4 ton but it is ROUGH! It has had a long hard life of towing. The original owner was a family friend of the current owner and used it to pull a 5th wheel travel trailer for the first 100K miles the ip went out and he sold it to the current owner who used it as a farm truck. He installed a john deere fuel filter system pre lift pump installed a 93 lift pump, still has the factory post LP system. He said he pulled anything and everything behind the truck up until the day the oil pan filled with water. Original red block.

The frame looks solid, the bed is trashed, I can see through the floor pan, the interior is junk, the rockers and cab corners are also rotted. I was planning on doing a body off restore (not going for all original) and painting the frame and possibly modifying a few things, so swapping out the cab and bed could be done at that point.

My question is: Is it worth $400 for the 3/4ton and $300 for the 1/2 ton? I know I am looking at alot of work but can I get better for the price?

I am not finding much in a $500 price range though. There is one local but the guy didn't leave his # in the add and wont reply my emails.

My thought is I COULD start setting the frame, engine, drive train, and suspension up and just wait on a gasser body that is in better shape and just swap vin plates so I can still register it as a diesel. We don't have inspections or anything to pass but I don't want to hassel with taggin it a diesel later on if our state laws do change.

I know the laws change from state to state but what are some of the laws on swapping gas and diesel engines? Is it as easy as throw in diesel vin plate and a diesel engine in?

I understand there are other trucks out there but I rarely find an 80's model here that isn't rusted go for less than 1,000 and its even rarer to find one thats already a diesel.

MUCH BETTER! But no title... Thoughts?

Just got off the phone with the owner and he said he tried to run peanut oil through it and after ~1000 miles it wasn't getting fuel to ther engine and when it would run it was blowing white smoke... IP and lp out possibly from the oil eating things up? New fuel lines too? I can get the 1/2 ton with running engine and trans to pull the engine out of still.

He suggested getting a rebuilders title for it. What does that involve?

up here you can file for a lost title. they do a title search and then you post a bond and after x amount of time it's yours. what about finding the titled owner and getting him to help you?

Thats what I am trying to get out of the guy. He says he just doesn't want to pay to get a new title, I said I would do some thinking (i think out loud here on the forum) and get back to him. I would pay to get it if the titled owner can be found, esspecially if I just have to pay for a lost title from the current owner.

This guy is ticking me off. He won't answer his phone or return the calls. Either he really doesn't feel like selling the truck, he is a terrible person at returning messages, or there is something about the fact that he doesn't have the title that makes him not want to sell it to someone that will turn the vin# in.

Ok, he has lost my business.... Gave me the run around when I finally got ahold of him and then said it might be sold when i started pressing the title issue.

Found a clean 83 4x4 1/2 ton that might be a decent canidate. Engine and tranny got pulled for a tranny rebuild but never got reinstalled, they are in the bed w/ campershell. Perfect time to ditch the TH350 and throw in a 700R4 I think. This guy isn't much better to get ahold of but has atleast responded a few texts and sent me some pics.

One more axle to swap gears on and a 4x4 is tempting to put mud tires and a lift on. :rolleyes5: That doesn't meet my mpg idea....

I wanted to just fix up an old 6.2 but finding one that isn't battered and beaten is proving to be difficult. If it is a gasser truck I would prefer one w/o an engine to reduce cost. I really want to get the donor truck and shell for less than 700. Yes its a tall order but I think it is doable. Now I have in my possession the 1/2 ton donor truck and am on the trail of a 79 w/ good body, no engine, and the owner already started dismantling things for a restore project. If I get that I will have 500 in the 2 trucks and there is another running 6.2 engine for sale locally for 200.

sorry for the double post. borrowed internet from the neighbors is unreliable! :)

so is the one you bought a diesel, or a gas one for the body?

does it have to be square body? there is a decent 1992 C1500 6.2L auto for sale locally in decent shape for 2,500

I am wanting everything in a 2wd square body 8 lug 3/4 ton.

The truck I have is an 82 1/2 ton 6.2 700r4 2wd with a rusted body. I picked it up for 250.

I am looking for a solid 3/4 ton to drop the engine and tranny in.

What ever I get I am planning custom suspension and paint so the paint doesn't ned to be perfect. I want to build the truck I want basically.

They didn't offer diesels in 79 so the one I am looking at had to of been a gasser.

This is what I want to start with, a clean slate! Says the interior is completely bare and the engine comparment has been completely stripped. He said he will take what ever I offer just to get it out of the way. :D (Some assembly required lol)
http://oklahomacity.craigslist.org/pts/2341107762.html

The engine I found is a CUCV take out. It was a running when the guy bought the truck for the axles. Said the truck is in perfect condition too but he just wants the axles for a rock crawler. He said he will sell what ever I want out of truck so I will go check out the 79 and see what it needs.
