I see a red block in there! Talked to the owner, he is the original owner and accidentally dropped it into park on the highway 7 years ago hasnt moved since but it was running when it was parked with 79,000 miles on it. 3/4 ton 2wd.

I have been looking for a square body 6.2 just like that for awhile to use as a DD MPG getter. I think a 700r4, 3.73 or 3.42 gears, paint, and some elbow grease on the interior will have it ready. Let me know your thoughts.

Last vehicle I looked at that was slammed into reverse at highway speed had the #8 rod ventilating the block. The park pawl will not engage at speed, rather, it just makes noise. Something doesn't add up in the story. Just saying...

Good point, I was wondering if that had any ill effects on the engine but he did say it ran after words but could not move. I suppose I could assume I am buying a straight truck body and frame and get lucky if the engine is good. I will deffinately bring oil, fuel, and batteries and try to start it. If it doesn't turn over at least then I will use that to my advantage.

I have him talked down on price already so if i prove the engine is toast then he should back down more.

If it runs, then it would be no trouble to find a good replacement trans. Even here in Labrador i can find replacements. I'd love to have a 2WD 6.2L, running 29's 3.42 gears  i'd definitely put the K5 into weekend duty. Back when it was stock height with 31's i was able to squeeze 17-25MPG's out of it on average and i can imagine it would only be better with a lighter truck and a 2WD chassis.

You could probably squeeze out more from higher gears but you'd lose low end grunt and i find that it helps city mileage a lot. Still plenty of gear left for cruising on the highway too if needed. I think it's the perfect balance. I'd go higher if you have a tow rig or work truck already though. No need for grunt if it's a hypermiler.

Grunt is not an issue. During the summer I will likely drive my 93 most of the time towing trailers that are easily over 20,000# but I would like something that can get 20+ on average and still haul a load of feed (~1,000#) or small trailer (fourwheeler or welding trailer) if needed hence looking for a 3/4 ton 2wd. During the winter I will not be drgging my tractor and swather around and will spend most of my time on the road and in the shop.

My 95 has gotten 22 but is typically around 17-19 but is down for a headgasket or worse. After I get a 6.2 truck set up how i like then I will likely turn the 95 into a fun truck.

2wd, 3.42 gears with 29" tires is probably a good setup for all around mileage. Taller tires only if its often run for long periods at 60+ mph.

You might even find some 3.08 gearing that you can use real short tires on for a low rider, more aerodynamic.

That first truck looks nice with some imagination and a good seat cover perhaps, I like the front grill. Might be able to get a take out 6.2 at online military auctions for $150-500, and if you check the purcahse dates they just might be AMG optimizers, or guaranteed take outs for under $1000 I think at one place.

You Americans have it so EASY! LOL

Even though i live in a town surrounding a military base, they got nothing good in 6.2 or 6.5 form. If those government auction sites would send to a Canadian base, i'd be set LOL. I'd have a 6.2 or 6.5 in every vehicle i own (definitely would have a 6.5L box Caprice right now)

I was thinking maybe a 2in drop out back but nothing real low since it will be going down back roads still. Maybe some 20in wheels not real wide maybe in the 7inch range with a 30-31in highway tire, 3.42 gears to keep the little bit of grunt it has, 700r4 with shift kit, dual straight pipes, and some paint, interior, and body work.

I want to be running ~2,200 rpm at 70, alittle help with gearing and tire size ideas would be great.

There has been alot of 6.2 liter engines on craigslist lately and alot of old 6.2 trucks so finding an engine shouldnt be a problem

With 3.42 and 31" tall tires you might hit 2000rpm at 70mph with the 700R4. The 700R4 has a higher final drive ratio, so it would be like 2.4:1 with 3.42 gears, vice with a 4L80E it would be about 2.8:1.

I have like 30.5" wheels with 3.42 gears and 4L80E and it loves 65-75mph, or more.

I would think if you are going for mpg a manual od would help. I don't have a real lot of faith in the 700r4s.

I hear the whole 700r4's are weak thing all the time but I am not convinced. I have had 3 trucks with that tranny and still have one to this day and the only time I cooked one it was on a 02 4.8l 2wd 3.42 gears, 33in tires, prerunner wanna be, efi live, vette servo, mid tube headers custom dual 3in exhaust. I cooked that one because of a lead foot and racing/drifting corners WAY too much.

I still have my 95 305 with 4l60 (same basic tranny as the 700R4) and it is used to pull stock trailers all the time on the original tranny. I am not saying they are the best or they can take the same abuse as a 4L80 but they can be good in a low hp cruiser IMO.

I also don't want to build a cruising truck and have to shift all the time. I do understand that I will be giving up some mpg due to parasitic power loss through the tranny but 25 mpg is my goal and it has been claimed possible in that set up.

My 95 305 used to get 22mpg @70mph before it got put to farm duty with 4L60, 3.42 gears, and 30.5 tires. That put me at 2000ish rpm. So would the NA 6.2 be in its torque range right there or does in need to be slightly lower or shorter tires?

The 700R4 is a good choice for a cruiser since it does have higher gears. taller wheels puts more strain on it on acceleration. I tore one up on an old Camaro, which didnt have a ton of power but I drove it like I stole it every day. But my uncle and I rebuilt it, and it was a lot stronger then. You can get them improved. I also tore up a 4L60E on a newer LT1 350 camaro, driving it like I stole it every day. But they performed well all the way up to failure, and they were at pretty high mileage.

I know the 700r4s/4l60 can be built up. I had a couple turds[Jasper]. A manual will give better mpg. Something like a nv3500. I can see why your 02 ate the tranny. 3.42s and 33 tires plus small motor. It had to be searching continuously.

Yeah it didnt help that I went muddin, raced, and drifted in it all the time. The 02 would stay in 2nd gear until 100 mph before it shifted out. I was gonna put in 4.10's and a super charger when the tranny went out and I wasnt working at the time so i sold it (4.10 detroit gears went with it) and bought my 95 Z71 6.5.

I have had good luck over all with stock 4L60's as long as I didnt abuse them too much. I plan to build it up alittle since it might get used for some light towing and I can't promise it wont find my lead foot on occasion.

Ok, I can get the 82 with a blown head gasket (link posted earlier) and an 82 1/2 ton 6.2 700R4 long bed for 700 total. I have done some parts swapping with the guy that has the 1/2 ton and he has owned and worked on a 6.2 his 83 since 87 so I am pretty sure I can trust him. He has contacted me a few times to bounce some ideas off of me for his 1983 project truck. I have given him this site a few times but I don't think he has stopped in yet. He bought the 82 for parts and has only taken the seat out but said he drove it for a few years and it got 22mpg before he stopped driving it due to rotten fuel lines.

The 1/2 ton runs but has rust and the 3/4 ton has a fairly solid body (small cancer spots forming and a dent in the bed) but had a gallon of water in the oil. Sounds like an engine and tranny swap to me and a parts truck when its all said and done.

I know the early 700R4's had lots of weak spots in them but if it still works then I will keep it until I can find and build a good tranny.

What do you all think?
