I Got steering issues

I know first hand the steering damper can give you hokey steering when it's going. I don't know if it could change the steering geometry.

Schiker,Funny thing is the truck should permanently pull to the right if any of these components are affected, and that is not te case, truck still trails well

Lower Ball joints ,tie rod ends at the wheels and idler arm where replaced and wheel alignment done less than 20 k ago.

I think i should go and have allignment checked again, they have the proper equipment for it.

Yeah, I started thinking the same thing on the way home today and was going to ask if it was now pulling to one side just a bit. I would tend to think if not pulling then something from the rear axle/frame/torsion bars etc changed???? Or it might be the caster changed some which is not suppose to cause tire wear or misalignment (but I think it can sometimes depending on somethings at least it seems to affect other things that can lead to misalignment if it changes I think).

I think it will take lifting the weight off the joint or culprit to find the issue. Keep us posted.

Update

The other day I had the steering system thouroughly examened and wheel alignment checked.
Everything panned out OK,no play anywhere, alignment 100% correct.

The technician there figured there must be something wrong with wormgear and rack in the steering box(couple broken balls perhaps)

I guess its time to rip the thing out and have a looky see inside.

That's probably it.

I had to replace the steering shaft and nut(ball retainer) in my fordson tractor. It would steer hard and the steering wheel position changed.

My old man had his 6.5 diesel just about throw him in the ditch a few times. He didn't like it either. He said he would be driving down the road at highway speeds and all of a sudden the truck would jerk big time. Almost put him in the ditch a few times.

I think he said the cv joint was the culpret. It didn't appear bad but when he changed both axles he never encountered the jerking again. Needless to say he got rid of the truck a short time later. But he did tell the guy about what had happend. The guy is local and never encountered the problem so it must have been the cv joint is what they think. Just thought I would throw that out there. His never spun the gear in the box though.

Thanks for the tip Doob,i didn't think of that.
No reason though for the CV to lock up going straight ahead and in 2 wh drive.

I think i found the culprit.
GM has a service bulletin out for the steeringwheel speed sensor.
Intermittent loss of steering effort left or right:eek:,usually recovers while driving or after next key off/on cycle .

Gm has no recall out for it,they say it don't cause loss of vehicle control...
(I would've been dead allready if it wasn't for just losing control off to the right..:rolleyes5:)

New sensor is only $150. :rolleyes5:

Wonder if i can just disconnect the stupid thing?
The older trucks don't have it.

Anyone know What year did they started that?

97 and up, all across most GM makes and models.

Sensor is located on the end of the steering shaft about 6" from the inside fire wall,on mine a grey plastic ring 1/2" wide,3 wires on top(by feel only).
Real sweet f"ck to replace, need to remove the shaft out from the engine compartment and the firewall boot before one gets to access the stupid thing on the inside.

I disconnected the sensor but now the ABS lights come on because of it.
