I've seen designs made from PVC pipes, stainless steel canisters, to water filter heads/housings (clear). Mine uses a 2" dia PVC pipe, cap on one end, threaded plug on other end, external clear PVC tubing to indicate water level (cheap).

I've gotta say that what you and your friends are doing is inspiring -- you're several steps ahead of where I am.
