hx 35 turbo

Why is the HX35 not a good match? Is the turbine housing too large-12 cm's? What about the HY35 or HE341 with 9 cm housings?

I have not posted on here in a while but I would just like to put it out there that I have over 50K miles now on my new engine and turbo combo.

I have been getting 18-19 miles per gallon with the HY35. I run 18-22 Psi max and have been running very good. No problems in heat, I just towed a nova back to my place from Detroit and got 17 MPG all the way running 70 mph.

Just to put it out there. If you are going 18:1, I would recommend the HX setup. Low EGT's (never seen over 1000F and I have a hot program that I use some times for fun). Never been over 200 F either while towing.

Good info, thanks. I got a cheap HX so I'll try that, if it doesn't work, putting an HY on isn't a big deal, it should simply be a bolt over affair.

I am not touching the motor for now, so its at the stock compression, 20:1 isn't it?

I'll still keep it around 10 psi then in the future, change out the pistons.
 
well guys i got the heads off my truck yesterday... took 6 and a half hours. The nuts on the manifolds were rusted so bad that I had to pull the heads with the manifolds still attached. But I got them off so whenever I get time I gotta get my heads magnafluxed and clean everything up. Then i'm gettin my injectors rebuilt and prolly gonna get some new manifolds. The UPS man jus pulled in so hopefully he's got my turbo. Gonna take some time tho I'll keep postin won't get to work to much this week we gotta bunch of hay to bale but i get to drive my neighbors cummins :smile5:
 
Not altogether a bad deal taking the heads/manifolds off together. Much easier access to apply heat w/ a torch & get the fasteners out without breaking anything off & then having to drill them out.

I'll get a good camera tomorrow my phone doesn't take very good pics. But heres the holset turbo i bought compared to my stock turbo. above was the passenger side head with the manifold attached.

If this helps you guys at all on this I put a boost gauge on my 02 cummins. It's running 20 psi at WOT stock around 6-10 cruising. It is intercooled. That is not far off from a GM spec. It is a wastegated Holset.
 
Just to throw it out there, I have tuned my truck a little more accurately and have gotten 22 MPG on my last long trip (320 miles) with 0 stops.

So just to let everyone know, there is a solid combo out there that can make great power, last long and get great milage.

I was actually scared to drive the truck because at I had gone 250 miles on half a tank and have never done that in my life. Thought the gas gauge was off.

The truck also has a 3" life, 33" BFG AT's and a fiberglass topper on the bed.

And the truck had about 150 pounds of ammo, 50 pounds of guns, chairs, a folding table, two guys and a cat.:smile5:

Anyways, back on track. I have seen some great milage with my HY 35W
 
well I can tell you the Dodge have a pretty big IC and the Holset snaps up pretty fast. I have a set of 6.5 manifold off my 2000 with busted studs. They can be drilled out easy enough but I was lazy at the time and bought a set off ebay but I want to measure the flange to see if it's the same as the Holset. Why I'm thinking aloong these lines is the CUCV I want to build has loads off room for a nice sized IC so I'm wondering if I could run one if properly Intercooled plus the IC should take the thing down a little. Not sure if 6.2 would handle higher psi better or worse than a 6.5 but could always swap the heads I guess. Not sure at all on that.
 
Yes, but you're 18:1 with IC. I think that the advice against the Holset was for a truck in stock trim.

And that there is the difference - good post, Rhino.

Chicago, I would kill to have a Penninsular 18:1 setup with a holset like you're running (by the way, is it an HY35 (like you said) or an HX35 (ilike in your sig)? - there is a difference, for those wanting to build their own.)

However, I think Turbine Doc's point was, as rhino mentioned, about a stock engine (21:1) - just swapping the turbo, nothing else. We know the ATT is suited really well for that application and that the efficiency profile matches the engine needs. Anything bigger, we probably need an intercooler and some way to restrict boost levels, in my opinion.

Of course, I've been wrong before :D
