Huge problems :( Engine maybe

I'd be curious if one of your glow plugs might have snapped off and wedged. At least that was my fear before I upgraded my originals. It wouldn't take much to pull them and look.

Not the case. Looked good through injector hole, and came out good to test that cylinder.

hope it didn't hit the piston....

Damaged the Piston.

Ok, now I need a new Piston, rings, Headgasket, bearing.

Anyone know where i can get one piston quickly? Do they only sell them single?

I know a guy at a machine shop that I can drop the head off friday morning and have it machined up and fixed up for about $200.

Biggest problem thus far is finding a single piston. and anything else I need.

I am not an engine rebuilder, nor a mechanic, so please tell me anything else I need.

Head Gasket,
Piston,
Piston Rings,
Lower piston bearing

Anyone within a few hours of Massachusetts happen to have what I need for sale? I'm willing to drive far to get this for the weekend. Not sure what dealerships offer, or how long to get what i need.

Call around to all of the machine shops and diesel shops. I found a piston for free doing that.

Matt,
Sorry been offline for a few days and just saw this now. Unfortunatley I am getting ready to leave for NY but there is a junkyard in Enfield CT not far from you. Pretty sure he has some 6.5s. Might be cheaper and faster at thgis point to drop a used motor in and fix the other one later given your circumstances. There # is 860-763-0896. I usually deal with Bill. He knows me. Kenny with the Oil Co. Otherwise any good auto parts store should be able to get a piston etc.
If you need tools etc I'll shoot you a PM with my #. I have GMTDScan it won't do you anygood. You have OBD2. Sounds like you already know whats going on but for those others in the future who are low tech you can isolate a dead cylinder by cracking injector lines loose while engine is running.

Also Matt I have an engine hoist if you need to borrow it. It's smaller one so I don't know if it would lift a 6.5 full dress but a long block should be OK. I did a 6.2 long block with it.

My mechanic thinks he can drop out that piston and replace it fairly easy. He is going to lift the engine a bit, drop the pan, and go to town.

Here are some pix of the piston.

Does not appear to be cracked, just beat to hell.

And a quick shot of the head.

Kenny thank you. We have everything we need for the job, just need to find a piston tomorrow, so he has all weekend to work it.

Does that sound right, all I need now is

Piston & Ring
Lower Bearing (Just in case)
Head gasket
Head Work, (Fix valve, clean/Machine)
Intake Gaskets

Looks like more carbon in that cylinder, must of not been having full combustion on that one for a while.

Are those dents from ring fragments? That would explain the carbon and the lack of compression. Your head, though dimple punished, may be sound.

Why did the valve drop through? Broken spring - lost keepers?

Finding that and making sure it doesn't happen again are part of the fix...

Glad you got it narrowed dawn, Matt. Not as good as it could have been, but not as bad as it could have been, either.
