~~~HUGE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS~~~ Truck Won't Start & Drags Voltage Down
Ok, still won't Start with the Main Power Wire to the GP Controller Unplugged...but Voltage doesn't get Dragged Down like before, it stays Up. I Turn the Key and the Truck goes totally Dead.
Resting Voltage at Driver Side Battery is 11.44V / Pass Side is 11.24V.
So if I go Buy 2 New Batteries, get them In and still have this Problem, where do you Guys think we should go from there?
:sifone: Two new batteries is all you will need. You are 1 volt short of a six pack...
Batteries are toast/sulfated if they can't support glow plugs alone.
Take the batteries to be tested. This is better than just throwing money at it. You might just get your answer after testing. Start with the easy things James.
Autozone and Advance bot do free battery testing, and offer recharging normally in less than an hour on there high capacity charger. I'm betting batteries though. If the glow plugs or controller were bad it would pop the fuse. Teh fact you say it is dragging it down to about 7 volts tells me it's not drawing to many amps(or else it would pop the fuse) but that the batteries can't handle the load.
From your Northern Brothers, who know all about cold weather and starting issues... check your batteries for a dead cell or two. :hihi:
Don't take much to mess up your whole day...
SOB!!
It was the Batteries.
Got Banged for almost $300 at NAPA, but they were the Biggest ones they had In-Stock.
I didn't wanna and still can't Believe it was the Batteries. I got some Baddass Expensive Odyssey's too. But I guess if you got Dead Cells, there's not much you can do about it.
I had this happen to me after i rebuilt my engine. But mine died in the parking lot at school. I got it going with 1 battery to the auto store and got 2 new big boys at autozone. Been good for the 3 years so far. I paid just shy of 200 bucks with CNYJEEP discount.
I believe ODDYSEY got bought out by johnson controls here a few years back when OPTIMA got bought out. Johnson controls makes an OK battery at best, but they are really cutting corners on there AGM batteries like the OPTIMA's and other spiral cell batteries. I use DEKA now which can be bought from NAPA and CARQUEST. I'm having ALOT less trouble now wit hthe DEKA's than I was with JOHNSON CONTROLS. And MOST of teh batteries you buy today are all made by JOHNSON CONTROLS. I believe they make close to 75% of all car batteries out there today. So wether you buy an AZ, ADVANCE, or WAL-MART, they are all made in the same plant to the same basic specs. I started to buy AGM's here awhile back until I heard about all of the problems with the latest offerings in a group 75 size(DEKA doesn't make a group 75 in a AGM, and I don't have room enough on teh drivers side for anything bigger).
They stopped making dual post duralast gold tops. I went to take mine in for dead cells after 2yrs of service and they had to do some scratching to find me a set. They argued and said my truck doesn't need dual posts and they don't owe me those batteries. My response was in bought dual post and by God I'll get returned a dual post battery of equal quality with the same warranty. Guess what they gave me? Lol
Glad you got it James. I had that experience 1 year ago this month and since I have a tire and alignment (with batteries) shop just across the cornfield from me, I went with a couple of Interstate Megatrons. I knew they were getting weak. Never ceases to amaze me that when a battery pukes, it just flat pukes.
$255 out the door for the pair. 800 CCA, 85 month. Oughta last as long as the Delcos did.
Those are the batteries I got while I waited for my duralast batteries to get rounded up.
Jeez, I sure hope JC didn't Buy Out Odyssey!! Quality for sure is gonna go Down the Toilet. But mine were Old enough that they were still made by EnerSys, so atleast they were the "Good" ones.
Thanks for the Help Guys!
ODYSSEY was NOT bought by Jonson Controls. Just the Poor Optima brand and they have ruined the reputation ever since.
Hopefully the ODYSSEY's were covered by warranty?
Well, went and got a Lad Tester just now. It's been bothering me that these Batteries took a Shit on me. They've been Sitting on the Garage Floor since I took them Out...which Batteries Sitting on a Cold Cement Floor, isn't Good for them. So they should be in perfect "Cold Weather Conditions" from that.
Hooked the Load Tester up to 1 and Hit the Button, and it is perfectly fine.
Hooked the Tester up to the other one, Initial Voltage is Good, Hit the Button, Drags down to 6-7V. FOUND THE BAD ONE!! This was the one that was on the Passenger Side.
So I got it on the CTEK now, Charging in Cold Weather Mode. When that's done, gonna put it in Recondition Mode, leave it on that Mode Overnight. Take it Off Tomorrow and let it Sit for about an Hour or so, then Load Test it. If it still Fails, it def. has a Bad Cell.
I Feel Good about not having to Throw Out BOTH Batteries now.
Heat on the pass side is what makes that one usually go 1st.
Ha, I woulda thought Cold was. Since it's away from everything else, and due to it being away from everything, the Longer Cable Leads to it doesn't let it Charge enough.
I wrapped my pass side in heat reflective tape. Might look into a heat shroud blanket, maybe the Raceday cables will help w/ charging differences. My 6.5's kill pass side Batts too and I give the spares to friends w/ gassers.
Nope, the passenger side battery is hiugh up on the firewall back behind the engine. The drivers side battery is out in front by the radiator where it gets airflow accross it to keep it cooler, but the passenger side gets all the engine heat blowing back on it. Not to mention the turbo downpipe is over in that area and puts off alot of heat as well.
I always thought that only Cold Temps were Bad for a Battery, and Heat, to a Point, generally didn't Affect them, but I guess not.
