The title says it. How long do they last ? The original one lastet about 100.000 Kilometers or from 1995 to 2007). In 2007 I put in a new one and this thing went bad yesterday. ONLY 3 years (or not more than 15.000 Kilometers) ???????????

What the F.... ?

Tomorrow I have to speak with the seller of this one. Here in germany you only get 2 years warrenty, but I'll this if there is anything possible. If not, I think I'll buy a new one via E-Gay.com, cauz it is still cheaper than here.

Cu,
Sven

Welcome to the new world where new parts are junk.

Don't replace anything that isn't broken. Chances are, the 12 year old, 100,000+mile unit is still better than a new replacement if tis not failed yet.

The stock 105 amp CS-130 will live a fairly long life if you don't pull alot of power on it. I've had trouble with them though failing pretty quickly if you pull high loads on them like lights and stereo systems. The CS-144 is a pretty easy swap and will live alot loger life under high load conditions, and it was the factory upgrade alternator for police and fire department vehicles.

My truck had a new alt on it when I bought it and it LOCKED the F@#$ Up after 4 months ~20,000 miles (on my birthday last april). New one just went out last week ~6 months ~ 30,000 miles (wasn't really the alts fault though). The 1st one I replaced was from autozone and had a lifetime warrenty AND THEY HONORED IT NO PROBLEM!

And yes i have put ~50,000 miles on my truck in 10 months.

How hard is the swap to a CS-144?

Is the CS-130 on my truck or do I have something else?

It seems my alternator does not put out much of a charge at all at idle.

I think this website answered all my above questions;

All the rebuilt stuff is garbage from Mexico and all the "new" stuff is low grade garbage from China. It sucks. Stuffs not even cheap anymore. The Chinese stuff is commanding a high price but is low grade garbage. NOS is best if possible or get it rebuilt at a reliable builder. Preferably one who has English speaking people doing the rebuilding.

I rebuild all my own stuff, save for the first GR starter as i didn't want to ruin anything. That goes for Alts and starters. I get all my parts from a place that's been around for 30+ years and only deals with good quality American made products. I just cleaned up a 12SI HO 94 amp for my blazer. didn't need rebuilding as everything was brand new inside. Total time 1.5 hours to pull it apart, clean it, re-install everything, test it, and install it in the truck.

My pickup has a 105A junk chinese "lifetime warranty" alt on it. I'm on my 3rd one in 3 years. Original alt burned up on me after 150K miles. Second one(first junk chinese alt) lasted a whopping 25-30K before the regulator took a sh!t. Returned it, got another, and I'm sure that one will take a sh!t fairly soon as it's been about 20K miles with that one now. I'm going to keep running the POS chinese alt on that truck since it has a lifetime warranty.

In the 15 years we have owned our Sub, the CS-130 alternator has been a source of trouble. I have taken it to a local rebuilder every time it had a problem. Early on I had an iceberg rear housing installed. Had to rework the mount slightly to make it fit. Lets see if I can remember all the problems; wouldn't charge (forgot what the fix was), bearings locked up, pulley came loose and the main power post broke internally. Seems like there was a few others as well. I have even taken to carrying a spare alternator on long trips, but fortunately haven't had to use it.

I have found there are quite a few configurations of this alternator. Different size bearings on each end and all kinds of internal parts and of course, varying quality parts. If you buy rebuilt from that auto parts store, there is no telling what you get. If you go to a shop and insist you want the good stuff, then you have a chance at a good one. But it cost more and as others have said, getting quality parts can be hard for even reputable shops.

When I rebuilt my engine I took the alternator back to the shop as the power post seemed loose. I asked him to check everything over. Turns out it had a bad diode. It was charging, but not 100%. So a new heavy duty diode pack and all was well again. I have the largest bearings at both ends and I'm supposed to have the heaviest duty internals. Still, I expect it will give me trouble again at some point. Maybe I will look in to changing it out for something when that happens.

This is on Autozone's site - I realize it's a reman. Is it the correct 144 amp for just a bolt-in replacement, and is the 6S pulley the right size?

A new Duralast from autozone with a LIFETIME WARRENTY is only $119? Why not go that route?

Maybe I missed it - the Duralasts I saw were 100 or 124 amp only, I want the 140 amp or larger. I remember reading about a 160 amp some time ago, but haven't seen one offered anywhere.

So, anyone knows a reputable remanufactor/vendor/etc. you could trust and who sells a CS-130 for a 1995 Chevy K2500 6.5TD Engcode "S" ?
Change the whole alternator or buy parts and change the regulator, new brushes and the rectifier ?
Wanna hear some opinions ! The problem is, parts are more expensive here in germany, than a whole alternator. So I have to buy them in the US (via ebay perhaps?) or buy a whole alternator (also via Ebay ?) cauz S&H plus custom tax and sales tax here it is still cheaper than to buy here.

Cu,
Sven

The thing that makes those alternators so cheap at the parts stores is they are just rebuilt... you are really paying for the warranty. Life time warranty sounds attractive, so they price it out to you gambling on several replacements and they are still making money.

I had a local guy rebuild my old PennTex off of bus 1. Taking things apart and diagnosis really helps. Could just be brushes etc. And yes, I had the same problem with puking out diodes. They will kill themselves when a diode goes even though they still generate some.

If you are keeping the CS-130, I would buy from an alternator shop. Have them build up an alternator to your specs, using quality components. There is a guy local here I could get one from, but since you don't have core, you are probably talking $200 or so, plus shipping. Since you are in Germany, is there an alternator available locally you could install? Maybe a Bosch or something that is more common there? It might take a little fabrication but it would be easier to get parts when you needed them. That is what I would be doing.
