No leaks.

Blowby is non-existent. New CDR. I am working the engine hard towing. Temp does not go over 210. 15w-40 Shell Rotella T

Does this hard work cause the oil consumption to be 2 quarts every 1K miles? :confused: This is double the norm of 1 quart every 1K.

Some oil smoke on cold startup only. Intake is oily, but, not sure if it is all CDR or maybe turbo shaft seal.

What other ways can a 6.5 use oil and is this in line with normal?
 
my turbo seals are going because downpipe was pretty oily and i only have 146K miles. dont know history of truck but it looked like the one that came with truck.
 
have looked really close for a leak because i bet you have one. i had a leak like that because my o rings failed at the oil filter housing.
 
Cupid's way of saying to order up an ATT perhaps? I use over a quart in 5,000 miles, also with ZERO blowby. I have oily residue in intake last I checked. NEW CDR. I wonder if I'm starting get cupid's push to get my ATT.

Thats whats nice about the cheaply priced well performing ATT. Sooner or later your factory turbo gonna need work. ATT is also a great preventive maintenance step.
 
Brooklyn Tows a member of the blowby club so he could probably comment on consumption but I can tell you both mine had 176k+ and niether used anywhere near that. Not even towing.
 
I have found too that depending on who built your heads the valve seals could be good or crap. The last one I took apart had SS Diesel heads on it and 5 selas on pass side were in pieces and 4 on the drivers side were in pieces. This was after 40 k on them. Had stock ones come apart too... Clearwaters seem to be pretty good.
 
Change your air filter. CDR should keep high vacuum at bay but long times at appreciable draw might pull more oil fumes out too.

AC delco or std paper filter with least restriction to flow.
 
I have tons of blow by, seriously a geyser at idle and I dont even lose a quart over 3000 miles. So that you have no blowby is not important. However if you are putting in more than 7 quarts when filling then you will easily throw out excess through thte CDR into the intake, even at high RPM high boost when CDR is supposed to be shut from the vacuum.

I always notice oil residue around my turbo, and now the ATT too, whenever I do a 100mph+ run at high boost. So I dont put a lot of confidence in CDRs doing their job over their designed use of around 10psi, since their supposed to close above 8psi or so.

Then I read Heaths article in MaxxTorque where he had a similar issue on his racer, because he put in too much oil and had too short of a dipstick. He was consuming lots of oil at high rpm high boost because the excess was getting pushed into the valve covers and out the CDR. I dont lose all that oil or have issue like he had, but tells me CDR doesnt work at high load. Perhaps because of crankcase pressure blowing it open instead of vacuum keeping it closed.

Thats why I relocated my CDR to the oil fill tube, and I put a breather on the valve cover. When I tried just a breather I would get oil coming out of it at high RPM high load (driving too fast of course on purpose). Then I added CDR to oil fill and that doesnt happen anymore.

I was wondering what I could do with my CDR. I never thought of that idea.

The important thing is to understand what the CDR is. It is a depression regulator, meaning its supposed to prevent too much vacuum/suction. As long as there isnt crankcase pressure youre all good, and the CDR is supposed to maintain just a little vacuum so pressure doesnt push leaks all over. A PCV valve on gassers does same thing in kind of opposite order, but works the same way.

I think drafting or having a breather with the CDR because the CDR is supposed to shut at high boost, but what if youre going up a long hill with high boost. When youre going to have worst blowby the crankcase pressure is going to go way up with no release, and cause oil leaks or blown cooler lines.
 
This used same amount of oil with the factory spring on the turbo. It was the replaced with a TM. I am running 14 PSI tops at lower RPM 3-4th gear full load and 9-10 PSI high RPM. Found the crankcase 2 quarts down at one time. Only oil drops are from the transmission. New oil cooler lines and doubled checked for leaks.

Can the valve stem seals eat this much oil?

I will try an open breather on the fill tube and see if that helps.

Any way to check the turbo seal and be sure it is or is not failing?
 
I don't know if I agree with that. If the turbo seals are leaking it shouldn't be any worse than a malfunctioning CDR. And that doesn't usually cause lots of smoke just lots of oil consumption. If they were blown and totally gone then maybe but not if it was just leaking.
