Heavy Duty Serpentine Belt For Duramax

It's the shroud around the fan that makes it so much harder than previous years.

The lly or the lb7 are relatively easy to do. The lbz and up have a fan shroud that bolts to the front of the engine for some purpose and leaves minimal room to much of anything up front. I find that removing the upper bolt gives you some play up top and unfortunately the crank is best attained from the bottom by removing the plastic skid plate. At best they are a PIA:)

Thanks Joe. That's exactly how I saw it and did it.

The LBZ's have the fan stack seal around them that makes it tight. GM put that there to eliminate the overheating that was seen on the LLY's. They tried sealing teh radiator stack, and found that the fixed seal around the fan improved airflow.

Just a few photos of the belt. I will be doing it very soon, weather permitting.

The belt looks to be of excellent quality, and a little beefier than the stock OEM belt. Any updates on yours Mike? Can you notice anything different? Probably not just due to the belt. I have noticed lately that my steering at crawl speeds (parking, etc) seems to be jumping or slipping a little. I am hoping the new belt will tighten things up a bit and take care of that.

I have not noticed anything different. I guess that's a good thing;)
The nice pretty green cover isn't as pretty any more...:D

I will have to swing by a carquest and see if they make one for my truck! Thanks for the info!

Serpentine Belt Routing for a 2006 Duramax

the hardest part for me was reading the faded belt routing picture on the fan shroud...

This is the Serpentine Belt Routing from the 2006 Diesel Supplement.

Serpentine Belt

Just trying to get as much info in here as possible. I changed my belt over today. Thanks to all the info in this thread, the job took me only 15-20 minutes tops. Very helpful info in this thread to make the changes a snap. As Mike mentioned, definitely a shop only change though. I would not want to do this while on the road. I personally found coming through the top left side of the motor for accessing the tensioner. With the complete plastic air intake filter and tubes removed, I was able to fit a 1/2 " breaker bar in there and push down on the tensioner. I left the pulley for the alternator for last. A simple push down on the tensioner and a quick slip of the belt over the alternator pulley and the job was complete. I also removed the plastic guard from the bottom on the front end to align the belt over the large pulley for the fan.

Just an update on the green Heavy Duty Serpentine Belt. It is performing just as good if not better than the regular OEM belt. I still have a little green color left to the belt. No problems whatsoever.
