h1c exhaust q

Hey Les. I noticed that also after I looked at the pic. The vanes are fine. I'm not sure what they are called but the larger vanes behind them make them look ef'd up in the pic. Good eye.

Steve

IIRC your going to need a different exhaust side. H1C turbos dont have a wastegate. I have a WH1C like tanners on my truck, the W stands for a wastegated H1C. Not sure what the H1C boosts too, but im gonna guess too high, especially with a moslty stock truck.

do you know what housing is on your H1c? if i had to guess, i would say it has the too tight 12cm2, which is too small for a 6.5l that does any type of working.... a H1C with a non gated 16cm2 housing will boost to 12-18 psi WOT with a cranked .310" pump and have half the drive pressure of your small housing WH1C..... you should install a drive pressure gauge and monitor your drive pressure, and you will be shopping for a bigger housing too..... and for the record a H1C/16cm2 with OEM 56mm compressor wheel will build boost 800rpm sooner than an ATT much more efficiently with no smoke... we have a pretty good idea about this as i have swapped 16 turbo configurations since march...

I do believe that is is the 12cm housing. I traded a plow harness i wasn't ever going to use so i wasnt too worried about it and figured anythign would be better than the GM-4. Someday i may trade up exhaust housing, but for now its a lot better than it was. How much do the 16cm housings go for? Can you get anything larger?

Check the ebay, i see holset exhaust housings on there all the time and not very expensive. Even though you have the 12cm2 housing its still an upgrade over the stock turbo. a 16cm2 housing should make for a good choice.

I am planning on sticking with the non-wastegated housing and running a16cm turbine housing. Turbonators testing with their h1c sounds pretty impressive and looks like the performance upgrade I am looking for. Plus I got it pretty cheap and it is in great shape.

I am pretty sure that I have the 21cm turbine housing. If you look at the pic, 21 is cast into the housing and the part number: 3519297 says it is a 21cm housing also.

Thanks
Steve

yep, the cummins guys refer to this one as the "laggy pig", but it has the biggest compressor wheel of all the previous H1C, put a 16cm2 on it and it will work great... same one as we run.... but we have a waste gated housing..... also it does not hurt at all to knife edge the twin scroll housing for faster spool-up...

"The laggy pig" huh? Must be why it was so cheap....

Anywho, so which housing would be more desireable, the wastegated 16 or the non-wastegated 16? From what I have been reading here, the wastegated housing will lag less down low but be more restrictive on the upper end. Is the lag between the two very noticeable or easy to live with? I do like the idea of better flow on the upper end.

Steve

We do a lot of our referencing and purchasing with BAE (Bob's Automotive Engineering)......great site, good service and brand name turbo's and pieces.

baeturbosystems.com/compressorwheels-2.aspx

That is the Holset link, (without the http://, of course). Most major manufactures are sold here, and have separate sections

Sooo... my gm8 finally gave up on me. Happened to have a H1C turbo from a 91.5 intercooled cummins. Saw this thread and thought what the heck, might as well stick it on. Lost a little low end, but holy crap i have power after 2200rpm!!! Seems way smoother up top and really clears the smoke up. Only hit 16psi max. Im pretty pleased but am definately goin to improve upon it. Took a 3in 90* elbow and angled the turbo side and welded a flange, fit perfectly to my existing downpipe.

What size exhaust housing do you have? I am still looking for a 16cm for mine. I'll be out of town for another 2 weeks so haven't been able to search for one.

Anyone know what type of equipment may have used the H1C with the 16cm housing? I don't think I will have any luck at diesel truck shops seeing as how the Dodge Cummins never came with one.

Hey Redneck, do you have any pics of your elbow you built?

Steve

il have to figure out what size the exhaust housing is. It was my only option as i needed my truck running. probably get some pics monday. Definitely not the low end of the gm8, but pulling at highway speed is a completely different truck. May consider a different housing myself. Never hits above 6lbs normal driving where my gm8 was whistling away at 13lbs.

Well Craigslist to the rescue again. I just bought a wh1c turbo with a 16cm non-wastegated housing. How does thw wh1c compare to the h1c? Which one would work better/more efficiantly?

if it says WH1C on the tag on the compressor, and it is non waste gated, it was swapped from the 12 cm2 which was the only waste gated housing used on the WH1c..... makes it a H1C with the WH1C tag....LOL

Actually the h1c should flow better than the wh1c since there is no restriction from the wastegate. I kind of want to try a 21cm housing for the hell of it.

My wh1c actually has a 16cm non-wastegated housing which I was planning to swap onto my h1c with the 21cm housing. After doing some research though, I think that I will run the wh1c due to it having a larger compressor than the h1c, how much larger I am unsure of right now.

we are talking 1.5-2mm of difference, not even enough to have to machine the housings to swap stuff around.... we have tried all the configurations of all the versions of H1C used on the dodges, and the WH1C, and a hx-35 off of a Feller/Buncher( industrial 6bt) everything mixed and matched( 17 different versions since march) and i can say from our testing that the most difference on the butt-dyno was changing exhaust housings.... the minimal difference in wheel sizes was not noticable in egts, boost, or butt-dyno....
