I just picked up an h1c from a 1991 cummins with 160k on it. There is no fore/aft play on the shaft and very little side to side play. It has the 7 vane compressor wheel and 12 vane turbine. It also has the 21cm exhaust housing and I am wondering how this will work on my truck. I don't tow much, mainly snowmachines and fourwheelers. I plan on getting a tune eventually but I would like to know if the housing is too large for what I use my truck for. I would like to maintain close to stock low end performance (spooling). I dont know a whole lot about turbos but this one seems to work well for the Turbonator boys. Thanks for any and all help.

Steve

That turbo will be very laggy, even the Cummings those turbos came on were laggy.

Don't expect to have any low end spooling or low end performance. That turbo is most likely best for highway use

What size housing would be best? I have read that the 16 and 18cm housings work well. Would this be the case without having a tune and which one would suite my needs best?

If I were to get a tune, which housing would give me the best all around performance? (I would like to get buddys switchable tune with towing, slight performance and economy options.). I am not looking to have an "all out" racing motor, just want to have a bit more power for passing and towing, when needed , and be reliable.

I too thought about my quick spool valve idea seeing as it works amazing, but that is implying the turbo has a divided housing. I dont know on those. And I doubt the OP would want to do the fab for either a quick spool valve, although little is actually required. The centermount would be ideal but a lot of work. I'd rank things as the best being centermount turbo, the 2nd best choice is the turbo with a quick spool valve (if applicable), the third being just getting a kit. Although I do agree that a 16cm and a tune would be perfect for what you want to use it for.

PM me I will sell you the switchable tune I used to use.

Then maybe get a kit or something as close to it as possible. It seems anymore most kits require fabrication anyways.

Well, I placed an ad on craigslist searching for a 16cm housing. I am not planning on starting my swap til spring, working outside in the winter sucks. I called a local diesel shop and they want $200.00 fo a new housing. Yeeouch!!!!

Also, to the guys who have rebuilt their own turbos, how do you go about balancing it when you are done, or do you even bother?

Balancing is a must, find a good shop that can do it and give you the numbers they settle at. Must be between one and four moments, the closer to zero the better the efficiency at higher rpm. If you want a kit I have just the ticket, and it will be done in a few hours, you don't need to modify your battery location or your stock air box location either. Pm me if you are interested.

Gilette Diesel Services offers upgrades for the H1C turbos. You can get a smaller turbine housing in 14 or 12 cm and even upgrade the compressor wheel and housing and get some good flow. Or, just get a different turbo.

Well I have a line for a used housing housing at a local shop. They have some laying around that I will go check out on Monday and see what they have.

dont need to balance it if the wheels have not hit the housings.... or if you upgrade, the new shafts and wheels come already balanced... go with a 16cm2 housing, whether waste gated or not it will work good for you.... and stay away from chinese rebuild kits and turbos for piece of mind...

Here are some pics of my turbo. I lied earlier, it has an 8 vane compressor.

Good to know about the flatsided bolt being from balancing the unit, thanks.
