GMTDScan Tech connecting problems.

I got this in feb. I just started using it in July. It has two usb ports on the left side and two in the back. When looking at the ports they are not listed as a comm port. When I try to connect to the pick up there is no comm ports in the listing.
 
The USB port is usually assigned to the COM port by the DRIVER APPS.

As said above, there is a driver from cyber space that needs to be downloaded.
That driver will automatically assign the USB port to become COM port.
That assigned COM port will then become the port to be used by the apps.

IIRC, my computer downloaded that driver.
Then I have to play a little bit from GMTDScanTech to find that assigned COM port.
Otherwise, try all the COM port one at a time and stop in the one that is working.
 
I downloaded the files to my computer but I see no instalation files or anything to "run" them. I read through the site and found no mention of this.

What do I do next?

It's been 5 years so I may be wrong. But what I think I remember is to put the driver download in the same folder as GMCTDScan. The rest will take care of itself.
 
It's just a file folder. It looks like there is no driver folder. It looks like it's just a read type files I downloaded.
 
I did that and it's just sitting in the folder with the rest of the files for the program

Or is there a specific file it should be put into?
 
I may be mixing it up with the License file.

Do you have a way to extract the zip file? That may be what needs to be done. My memory on this isn't very good.
 
Yep it was extracted before I added it to the folder. There was only the read files in the zipped folder. There must be another file or the app somewhere.

I'll see if I can find it while I'm away from home. I leave tomarrow for two to three months so it's not like I'm going to need this right away. My wife looks like she is walking the green mile right now. I guess I should get off this computer for the night.

I'll pick this up in a few days.
 
When you're back on see if you have a FTDI program file. It shows up in my program files.
 
I put the pick up to bed for the three month sleep. She'll be parked in freezing temps so I got everything set and batts disconnected. Plus it's late enough and with a 4am wake time.................. I'll have to wait so I don't have the head ache in the morning and new cast iron pans to buy.:eek::rof:
 
When in Device Manager, expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Then plug in the ALDL cable. Two things should happen, A "Com Ports" should display as well as "USB Serial Converter"

On the "Com Port" expand it and open "USB Serial Port", click on "Port Settings" then click on Advanced. The Com Port # should be the same as the one in GMCTDScan.

The Com Port is not displayed with the Universal Serial Bus Controllers.

This is in Vista.

Just checking to see if you got this working.
I'm also on a Windows 7 laptop
With the cable plugged in to only my laptop I have a "USB Serial Port (COM3)" and a "USB Serial Converter" in the Device Manager
When I run the ALDL Interface Test in GMTDScan Basic I get the following

Executing interface test procedures.

Opening COM-port, COM3... OPEN

Beginning COM test 1:
Sending test data.
Failed!

Beginning COM test 2:
Sending test data.
Failed!

Beginning COM test 3:
Sending test data.
Failed!

All tests failed!

Just for kicks, I plugged it into my newly aquired 1994 K1500 and I get the same results.

I figured after I see whats going on, then I'll decide weather or not to buy GMTDScan Tech.

That's, Windows 7 isn't compatible, is what I'm thinking.
I've even changed the properties to run the program in compatibility mode for older versions of Windows.

I guess I'll dig out the 10 year old laptop running Win2k, install the software, drivers and give that a try.
