Posted last night about the engine stopping when letting off the throttle. The problem was the battery post bolt had backed out. Found it today going down the highway and the gauges went dead. The post had backed out and was touching a metal bracket behind the battery on the drivers side and touching the battery attachment as well. Now, after all this it is charging fine and the cables appear fine but any load I put on the system like the rear a/c blower, power windows up and down, headlights, etc. the gauges all swing to the left about 1/4 scale and the "glow plug" light comes on dim. It appears I have a load carrying problem of some sort. The alternator charge at the battery is around 14.3 with a load on the system but the gauge shows about 10. When the load is removed the Voltage gauge shows normal. When the load is applied Oil pressure gauge drops, fuel gauge drops, speedo goes up to about 20. BIG MESS! HELP!

I'd start by checking and cleaning grounds. I'd also get a DVM and check battery voltagewith load applied. Factory guages aren't very reliable.

the other thing you can do is take it to your local autoparts stor and have them do an on the car test. they will be able to check batterys as well as alternator function.

I did do the battery voltage check with a voltage meter at the battery. It was around 14.3 with a load applied or not. Alternator works because when I unplug it voltage goes down to around 12.8

Also possible that you damaged one or both of the batteries - if there was a closed-circuit short happening, it can cause some plate problems - won't show up until high-amp loads are put on the thing.

As above, take it in for a test... get the alt and the batteries load-tested.

Just make sure they disconnect the batteries form each other before the test!! Otherwise it will give a false reading when the try it.

batteries need to be tested for sure. Short circuit on just about anything is bad and WILL cause damage. Secondly, I'm going to agree with chcking your grounds as well. Insufficent grounding WILL make your symptoms. Check your grounds as thats free and will only cost you time and maybe a bottle of anti-ox if you neer want to do it again. If that doesn't help it, get the batteries and alt. tested.

Fuseable link could be half fried allowing voltage but not amperage.

Thanks everyone. I will start going through all the above checks tomorrow if it rains. My son plays travel league baseball and we are in a tournament today and tomorrow. Its supposed to rain here all night and tomorrow so maybe I will have a chance to get on it tomorrow.

Had the batteries load checked today and they were both OK. I checked the grounds on the rear of the engine and the battery grounds to the frame and cleaned them and put them back. Where else should I look for the grounds? What about fuseable links; where are they all located?
